They’re trying to avoid the misery by starting where the first half-lap ends.

Wouldn’t the pool be heated?
I figured Caulfield was just being a smart smart aleck.

A pool cool enough for swimming laps is too cold to be comfortable for the first half lap. After that, it’s perfect.
And yes, Caulfield was just being a smart aleck.

Also it’s not just the cold - exercise early in the morning is unpleasant no matter what the temperature. But it’s worth it in the end. Caulfield is just snarking at someone who obviously doesn’t understand the value of delayed gratification.

Alternately, you start at the far end so that after that nasty first half lap you can just get out and leave.

Caulfield’s reply reminded me of the guy who walks into a bar and orders eight shots of vodka. The bartender lines the glasses up and fills them, whereupon the guy sets #1 and #8 aside, and then sequentially downs numbers 2 through 7 in less than a minute. When asked about this curious ritual, the customer replies: “Well, the first shot is always so hard to get down, and the last one is always one too many.”

Or the guy who drinks three beers on a particular day every year, one for him and one for each of two buddies who lives far away. One year he comes in and orders two beers, and the ‘tender offers his condolences. The guy says “No, no, they’re still alive. I’ve just stopped drinking.”

Actually, it’s funnier if you spell occur correctly.

They say that the first million dollars is hardest to earn, so I’m working on the second million, first.

Sorry to disappoint. I just can’t see the Arlo content here
Elyrest Jan 11th 2010 at 11:14 am 12
And Nicole, thank god for that!

Elyrest .. You are probably right .. any Arlo reference here would land the comic on the Arl-EEEEWWW page

I thought that the “midery” was a reference to the cool temperature of the water and that Caulfield responded that they would start on the kiddy end of the pool, where the water is much warmer (EWWW!). I assumed that that is why Frazz’s eyes bug out in the last panel.

…make that “misery”. Sorry.
