Which God Calls Maze

Nicole: If I remember my Genesis, God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden. This comic implies that Adam and Eve wanted out of the garden, and couldn’t because of the ….. MAZE?????? And God is pointing the way ? I might add that it appears that it is a straight shot out of the garden through the maze (probably poor drawing). So what exactly IS going on here .. God IS kicking them out and they got lost in the maze ? , they wanted out and got lost in the maze ? And what does God need with a Maze. One of those religious mysteries I guess.

Sometimes “showing people the way out” means forcing them to leave. In this comic, both meanings of “showing the way out” are implied. (God forced Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden AND he’s pointing the way through the maze.) It’s a play on words only using phrases instead of words.

    God works in mysterious maze.

“And thus, to show them the way, God extended the Holy Index Finger of Direction.”

    Paperboy, I love you.

Didn’t know God is that hairy.

“I might add that it appears that it is a straight shot out of the garden through the maze (probably poor drawing).”

Maybe God is parting the maze, like the red sea.

what I find even more mysterious is that I sent this in months ago and it is just appearing now .. :-)

BTW — Happy New Year to everyone on the site — it’s great hanging with you guys

Paperboy, your comment was much better than the comic!

  9. Molly J Jan 7th 2010 at 10:07 am 9

The maze should be covered in wysteria. Then we could say that God works in wysterious maze.*

    *with apologies to PB

Do not understand at all. Possibly the low pressure system that is whomping us with snow is causing my brain to be a bit slower than usual, but it’s equally possible that this is just a really dumb cartoon.

I think the point is that, on being evicted from the garden, they got lost in the maze. They are happy to be out of the maze and too ignorant too see that they can’t get back in and are now stuck in a cold, cruel world.

  12. Elyrest Jan 7th 2010 at 12:23 pm 12

I think this just ties in with the whole destiny thingy. Since we as humans had to be rescued by Jesus dying on the cross to pay for our original sins God had to setup the original sin. So he made a maze to lead Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. Cause why would they leave unless he made a game out of it.

This is what a good Catholic education will get you.

And thanks Paperboy for the laugh!

Hmmm I missed the maze part in my reading of Genesis. Perhaps it shows in the original Hebrew

(Nicole gets a gold star for not going off on a religious tangent)

“I missed the maze part in my reading of Genesis”

Nicole - this is what eight years with nuns will do to a person. We never read the bible. We read bible stories and I’m willing to believe ANYTHING can be in a bible story.

  15. Nicole Jan 7th 2010 at 01:12 pm 15

Elyrest — just for the record, I was raised roman catholic and also survived eight years of catholic grammer school.

It was the contridictions between what they were teaching and how they acted that made me read the bible … which is why I am now an atheist :-)

I think the point is that humans are dumb. First they ignore God’s instruction not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge (weren’t no apple, just a fruit), and then can’t find their way out of a simple maze.

Sometimes, I’m amazed at how smart animals with tiny brains are and I start wondering what the heck we humans are doing with all that extra real estate in our skulls. Oh, wait, commenting on CIDU. Never mind.

Nicole, time to give that gold star back. :o

    WW #16 …. oh pooh !

  19. Karen Jan 7th 2010 at 02:48 pm 19

Elyrest, I was educated by nuns and believe me, we studied the Old Testament till it came out of our ears. I can still recite parts of Leviticus from memory.

I think Keera has it right. People were dumb to eat the forbidden fruit, and they’re still dumb now.

“Why don’t you tell people? They can handle it. People are smart.”
“A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it!”

    Name that movie.

  20. Keera Jan 7th 2010 at 02:53 pm 20

Karen, I know that quote, but darned if I could place it. Had to google. And wouldn’t you know, it’s from my all-time favorite documentary. I never was good at remembering movie lines. :-/

Instead of extending his arm above, he should have been pictured hiding in the shadows. Then we could say God lurks in wysterious maze.

(with apologies to Paperboy and Molly J)

  22. Soup Dragon Jan 7th 2010 at 03:50 pm 22

    MIB, isn’t it?

  23. Folly Jan 7th 2010 at 04:31 pm 23

So, does god have 5 fingers and no thumb, or 5 fingers and a hidden thumb, or what?

  24. paperboy Jan 7th 2010 at 04:34 pm 24

    Thanks, Chuck#4, Kara#7, Elyrest#11; I just got there first.

  25. The Bad Seed Jan 7th 2010 at 05:00 pm 25

Bill, can you start a CIDO COTW Award (Comment of the Week)? This week I vote for Molly J (#8)!

  26. Elyrest Jan 7th 2010 at 05:19 pm 26

Folly (#22) - You’re right and those fingers/thumb are soooooo wrong. So maybe it really isn’t God or it means we aren’t created in his image.

    So many questions.

What kind of maze has a clear corridor all the way through? Or is it just an office full of cubicles?

  28. nameless Jan 7th 2010 at 10:43 pm 28

    Hi!
The way i see it is that the Adam and Eve in the comic were God’s experiment. You know, like lab rats in a maze? So, God made them as an experiment and is letting them out into the world to observe their actions.

  29. Nicole Jan 7th 2010 at 10:43 pm 29

Mark in Boston #26 … I noticed that too , I just put that down to poor drawing (like the hand ?) and if there is a clear corridor straight through why would they need help finding their way out ?

  30. Chakolate Jan 8th 2010 at 12:01 am 30

It really looks more like a cube farm.

  31. Keera Jan 8th 2010 at 02:10 am 31

Nameless, I like that explanation. Humans performing more poorly than do rats in a maze. (We do, you know. Which brings me back to my original comment. :-) )

  32. Karen Jan 8th 2010 at 07:25 am 32

Soup Dragon got it, MIB. And the lab experiment explanation makes the most sense to me, as well.

  33. Nicole Jan 8th 2010 at 07:42 am 33

Except that one does experiments because you are trying to find something out. God knows everything, so no need to have do an experiment.

  34. Elyrest Jan 8th 2010 at 04:01 pm 34

Is man one of God’s blunders or is God one of man’s? - Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900)

This was the quote in the Wordsmith Word-a-Day today. Seemed appropriate.

  35. Lord Jubjub Jan 8th 2010 at 07:11 pm 35

I was thinking it was a pun on maize.

  36. Orbert Jan 8th 2010 at 07:51 pm 36

There’s an illustration in one of my old Bibles with Adam and Eve leaving the Garden of Eden, and a giant hand in the sky pointing. God is mad and saying “Get out!” and he’s showing them the exit. It looks pretty much just like this (only without the maze).

This comic turns it around. They couldn’t find the way out, so God pointed the way.

  37. Todd Jan 11th 2010 at 12:01 am 37

I think God rearranged the maze for them. Which gives me an idea for a board game. Now to work out the details. Unless someone beats me to it.
