Uncle Tom

Nicole: How about a discussion about race … we haven’t had one of those in a while :-) I thought this was an LOL, but I wonder about others. I know Keith Knight is black, but I am not sure that would matter to me, but it might to others. Is this comic offensive? Is it less offensive because it was drawn by a black man? If Keith was white, would the comic considered racist ?

Just as a matter of interest: These two interviews explain how “Uncle Tom” evolved into an epithet, when in fact the Uncle Tom’s Cabin character was truly heroic. Interestingly, the public perception of Professor Henry Gates, the subject of the second interview, went through a similar change a few months after the interview was recorded, when he became less well known as a leading African American scholar than as the man who got arrested after throwing a temper tantrum with a Cambridge police officer -Bill

Double-Quote of the Week

Cidu Bill on Jan 7th 2010

I shifted this one over to the Billo site, because it might be a bit religiously sensitive even by the standards of CIDU’s off-topic discussions (and the link is now fixed)

Which God Calls Maze

Cidu Bill on Jan 7th 2010

Nicole: If I remember my Genesis, God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden. This comic implies that Adam and Eve wanted out of the garden, and couldn’t because of the ….. MAZE?????? And God is pointing the way ? I might add that it appears that it is a straight shot out of the garden through the maze (probably poor drawing). So what exactly IS going on here .. God IS kicking them out and they got lost in the maze ? , they wanted out and got lost in the maze ? And what does God need with a Maze. One of those religious mysteries I guess.
