…if the father is a cricket and the son is a cricket, the mother is presumably also a cricket. So why aren’t the parents also making the chirping noise? And why don’t they just close the door? It’s not as though cricket chirping is insanely loud…or is it if you’re a cricket?
And, of course, this comic totally overlooks the fact that crickets rub their wings together, not their legs. I know, I know, why go for fact when you can go for folklore?
I think the music notes are to indicate that he’s just playing his “music” too loud. Crickets don’t lay on their backs while chirping, but teenagers might lay on their beds while listening to music at night. It ignores facts of anatomy and insect behavior, but it also has crickets living in a house, reading, smoking and talking, so one more factual inaccuracy (or two) isn’t a big deal.
Susan T-O, some grasshoppers do chirp by rubbing their legs together, but I guess they are less well-known and wouldn’t be as easy to use in a cartoon.
Turquoise Cow, cricket chirping is not necessarily insanely loud, but it is insanely annoying, especially indoors, in a room with cinderblock walls. (We simply could not get any sleep until the whole family cornered the darned bug and silenced it forever. No, there are no crickets in Norway, but there are in my native California.)

I thought it was analogous to when kids play the stereo too loud .. nothing EWWW or Arlo-esque
The Bad Seed Jan 5th 2010 at 01:05 pm 2
The posture makes it seem Ewww/Arlo-esque for me. I’m prrrrrretty sure crickets don’t generally lay on their backs while they’re making their noise.

All young guy crickets do it.
Catelli Jan 5th 2010 at 04:06 pm 4
Cricket’s chirp by rubbing their legs to attract mates.
So if he’s trying to attract his mother and/or father, ewwwwww.

And why is Dad carrying a paper and a pipe if he’s just been trying to get to sleep and can’t because Junior is rubbing?

I’m over-thinking this, aren’t I?

This is the comics, ma’am. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

This is all Arlo to me . . . and it’s Paperboy for the win!
Todd Jan 9th 2010 at 03:52 am 15
Nicole doesn’t see the Arlo in a cartoon, and nobody comments about it!? Two firsts in one CIDU!

Todd (#15) - You’re right a double whammy. This has to be a first. Nicole, whatever were you not thinking of?
