Arlo New Year

A couple of people suggested that this belongs on the Arlo Page, but I can’t see it. So I’m calling this an AIDU.

I think “ring in the new year” is supposed to be some kind of sexual euphemism. He really rung her good last night.

  2. TasmanSea Jan 4th 2010 at 09:58 pm 2

It’s him blowing that noise-maker that tips it over into the Arlo page zone for me.

  3. bAT L. Jan 4th 2010 at 10:18 pm 3

I see how this could be Arlo territory, as the first response stated, but I think this is just Arlo being a great guy.

  4. Kedamono Jan 4th 2010 at 10:57 pm 4

Naw, look at the smile on Janis’ face in the first three panels. That comes from a good ringing the night before I’s tells you. She was rung good. :-)

All she’s missing is Farah Fawcett bedroom hair.

  5. Arthur Jan 4th 2010 at 11:00 pm 5

The reason it was suggested for the Arlo page probably has
to do with panels 1&2. That’s one BIG smile, and Arlo isn’t
even there with coffee or whatever. She might really like
being pampered by having something brought to her in bed,
but that’s not what (or not all) she’s commenting on.

  6. Kevin Jan 4th 2010 at 11:11 pm 6

I think it’s simply that they are ringing in the New Year in the morning with coffee since they didn’t stay up late enough to ring in at midnight. The first two panels are just Janis waking up.

  7. Jenn Jan 4th 2010 at 11:15 pm 7

Huh… I feel so innocent… I see a woman who went to bed well before midnight and is waking from a good night’s sleep. Because they missed midnight, Arlo is bringing her coffee in bed in his silly party gear.

  8. Elyrest Jan 4th 2010 at 11:17 pm 8

I didn’t send it in, but I certainly thought about it. The stretch, the smile, the ringing in followed by the blowing out of the noisemaker - all very suggestive of a very very good time last night.

  9. yellojkt Jan 4th 2010 at 11:38 pm 9

Janice’s new year came in with a bang.

  10. paperboy Jan 4th 2010 at 11:54 pm 10

    Yep; Arlo’s da man.

  11. David N Jan 5th 2010 at 12:15 am 11

Arlo and 2009: he hated to see it go, but loved to watch it leave!

  12. drdan Jan 5th 2010 at 12:25 am 12

Isn’t the morning stretch a way to indicate great sex taken from “gone with the wind”

  13. buzz Jan 5th 2010 at 12:50 am 13

Panels 1 & 2 + “you really know how to ring in the new year” (anybody remember “he/she can really ring my chimes” from the LAUGH-IN era?) + one fully extended fluttering fun-maker = Arlo page hall of fame

  14. The Bad Seed Jan 5th 2010 at 12:58 am 14

Yeah, she’s definitely basking in the glow, although I wouldn’t put this one on the Arlo page (or qualify it as an Arlo) since nothing’s overtly dirty.

  15. Kevin A Jan 5th 2010 at 01:01 am 15

The final panel reminds me of some classic scene in a movie I’ve seen several times, where it’d be perfectly innocent. I also think Janis is referring to the previous night. Yep; I echo paperboy.

  16. Powers Jan 5th 2010 at 07:15 am 16

You all need to get your minds out of the gutter.

Then again, this is Arlo & Janis, isn’t it?

  17. TheFish Jan 5th 2010 at 07:42 am 17

I saw it Jenn’s way, although I can understand peoples inclination to look for sexual inuendo.

  18. Father Bruno Di Frocco Jan 5th 2010 at 08:47 am 18

“Inuendo”? Nah. Just good normal sex.

  19. Nicole Jan 5th 2010 at 09:04 am 19

I agree … they had sex the night before … but it is sooo subtle I don’t think it slipped by the censor so much as the shrugged and let it go on its merry way.

  20. The Bad Seed Jan 5th 2010 at 09:56 am 20

I don’t think of my take on this cartoon as being that my mind is in the gutter, because they ARE married to each other, right? Intimacy of all sorts is integral in maintaining strong bonds and a happy marriage, and it’s a shame when sex just becomes the center of some weird power struggle in a relationship, something to be withheld. My mother taught me a long time ago that a lack of physical intimacy was the start of eroding away the foundations of a marriage. I don’t think I know any married people of any age who still sleep together, so I want to high-five Arlo & Janis! And I LOVE that JJ started portraying Janis more as an eager and willing partner, because she didn’t always come across as so enthusiastic.

  21. Elyrest Jan 5th 2010 at 12:35 pm 21

“I don’t think I know any married people of any age who still sleep together”

The Bad Seed - that is so very sad. It does make me wonder what kind of people you know (no criticism) because most of the married ones I know sleep together and have sex together. Now I know not everyone is open and honest about their love lives, but I really don’t think my group of friends and relations are lying. Some aren’t having sex, but most are. We’re in our fifties. My parents had a loving relationship till my Mom died at almost eighty. Your Mom was right.

  23. Mark M Jan 5th 2010 at 01:17 pm 23

There sure a lot of dirty-minded people here. Arlo and Janis have been married for years right? I can tell you, bringing a cup of coffee to Janis in bed will put a bigger smile on her face than anything that happened 8 hours before.

  24. Elyrest Jan 5th 2010 at 01:49 pm 24

Mark M (#23) - Why is having sex dirty? And why is interpreting it as them having sex dirty-minded? They’re married. It’s normal. As for the coffee, I hate to get coffee (or tea) served up to me in bed in the morning. It wouldn’t put a smile on my face. Seeing my husband would though.

We’re all different. And that’s good

  25. Anon Jan 5th 2010 at 03:27 pm 25

I’d like to point out that the blanket over Janis sits noticeably higher in the 2nd panel than it does in panels 1, 3, & 4….almost like there is something under there that wasn’t there before or after…

  26. paperboy Jan 5th 2010 at 04:42 pm 26

Anon#25- Egads, you’re right! That adds a whole new concept.

  27. Nicole Jan 5th 2010 at 05:25 pm 27

    Ohhhhh MY :-)

  28. Mark M Jan 5th 2010 at 06:33 pm 28

Elyrest, maybe it’s a matter of semantics, but my definition of dirty-minded is being able to take just about any scenario and turn it into a sexual reference. I was certainly not trying to imply that sex is dirty or that it would be abnormal, particularly from a married couple. Just saying that waking up with a smile does not automatically equal great sex that happened the night before. If you want to infer that, it’s fine. I just know that with the people I know who have been married for years, little things like having a cup of coffee there to greet them when they wake up would be likely to bring a smile. Now, that might lead to…, oh never mind.

  29. Nicole Jan 5th 2010 at 08:04 pm 29

Elyrest — clearly Mark M. is talking about me when he says “being able to take just about any scenario and turn it into a sexual reference” .. LOL

  30. Elyrest Jan 5th 2010 at 08:10 pm 30

Mark M - Sorry if it seemed as if I was jumping on you. The association of dirty with sex is something that has bothered be for as long as I can remember. As far as turning things into sexual references - I remember when I was young thinking there was life and then there was sex. As I got older I realized that it is a whole lot more complicated than that as sex is interwoven throughout more things than I could ever have imagined. And that’s not bad.

  31. Elyrest Jan 5th 2010 at 08:13 pm 31

Nicole - your last comment wasn’t posted when I started on mine, but it’s so obviously true.

And in a very good way!

  32. Mark in Boston Jan 5th 2010 at 08:30 pm 32

So how come Arlo and Janis have only the one child? You’d think SOMETHING would happen by accident again in all those years of Arloing and Janising.

  33. Bob Jan 5th 2010 at 08:47 pm 33

Mark in Boston - maybe it was a concious decision as the amount of “Arloing and Janising” likely decreased with an infant. They might have decided they didn’t want that to happen again.

Anon - by Jove, you’re right. That could account for both of their smiles.

  34. Chakolate Jan 5th 2010 at 08:59 pm 34

I think y’all are reading too much into it. A & J are an old married couple, and old married couples (even the ones who are young, really) generally leave late-night stuff on NY eve to kids. So they went to bed at a decent hour, and Janis is just happy that Arlo surprised her with coffee in bed.

Then again, why not let Arlo get a little? Go, Arlo!

  35. Paperboy Jan 5th 2010 at 09:35 pm 35

“Arloing and Janising”… I love it!!

  36. Nicole Jan 5th 2010 at 09:50 pm 36

Class … conjugate the verb Arlo
    I Arlo
    You Arlo
    He, She or it Arlos

    Good … and now Janice
    I Janice
    You Janice
    He, She or it Janices

Very good … now off with you all …. go home and practice your Arloing and Janising

  37. Cidu Bill Jan 5th 2010 at 10:16 pm 37

Nicole, how exactly do the linguistics work with this: does Arlo Arlo Janis, or does Arlo Janis Janis?

  38. Nicole Jan 5th 2010 at 10:27 pm 38

Arlo arlos Janice and Janice janices arlo

Of course human sexuality being what it is, there can be times when a Frank might arlo a Bruce, and a Diane might janice a Joan.

Threesomes can become very complicated with John arloing Mary while being janiced by Sue

and orgies just turn into a yellow pages of names

  39. Cidu Bill Jan 5th 2010 at 10:30 pm 39

For some reason, I just got a mental image of Jimmy Johnson pulling out his hair.

  40. Naomi Jan 6th 2010 at 02:17 pm 40

Um, I feel really stupid, but I just don’t get anon’s comment (#25) and paperboy’s reply
(#26) about “something under there that wasn’t there before…” In fact, all I can think
of is Ludwig climbed onto Janis under the covers, which is guaranteed to bring a smile to
most cat-lovers’ faces, but I’m guessing probably not what they meant.

  41. paperboy Jan 6th 2010 at 02:34 pm 41

Naomi#40- Arlo was “eating at Janis’ restaraunt”.

  42. Nicole Jan 6th 2010 at 02:41 pm 42

You can get any thing you want at Janice’s restaraunt … including Janice

  43. David N Jan 7th 2010 at 01:48 am 43

I sense that Nicole is REALLY going to miss this comic by next week or so … :)

  44. paperboy Jan 7th 2010 at 01:28 pm 44

    Ha ha, Nicole#42, you misspelled “restaurant”!…. what’s that?…Oh, dammit!!!

  45. Nicole Jan 7th 2010 at 02:18 pm 45

LOL … PB#44 — the reason I copied it from your post is that I KNOW I can’t spell “restaurant’ without a spell checker :-P

Oh David, David, David #43 … don’t you know that I can find sexual inuendo just about anywhere. Like the hydra, when this thread dies another will take its place

  46. Todd Jan 8th 2010 at 04:32 pm 46

If that was Arlo in panel 2, where is he in panel 1? I think that’s her knees. And there would need to be another panel between 2 and 3 if it was him.

  47. Bob Jan 9th 2010 at 12:40 am 47

Nicole - You make me smile (but I don’t have a noisemaker).

  48. Nicole Jan 9th 2010 at 09:23 am 48

um Todd — you wanna stop ruining it for the rest of us ??????? :-P

  49. David N Jan 9th 2010 at 01:14 pm 49

    @ Nicole: :)

Yeah Todd, don’t be busting on Nicole’s inuendo like that!

  50. Jeff S. Jan 9th 2010 at 06:40 pm 50

I believe Arlo blew the noisemaker in panel 2 as well… ;-)

  51. Nicole Jan 10th 2010 at 12:05 am 51

Jeff — that would make Arlo one fo the few men who can blow their own noisemaker
