Because they are like bison and could charge at any moment.

Fruit bowls, even in the wild, are not inclined to move.

They don’t move when you look, yes. But look away or blink…

[Australian mode on]This here is the wild fruit bowl, Fructus Catina, and this is a particularly nasty one. Instead of the normal apples, pears, and lone banana, this one has kiwi, star fruit, pomegranates, and a very ripe durian. That alone makes this fruit bowl a man killer. I’m going to approach this one carefully, and see if I snatch the kiwi from the bowl… Crikey! Didja see how that durian moved in to protect it’s kiwis? That’s why the best way to handle one like this is to use a 9mm parabellum rifle from thirty yards out…[/Australian mode off]

It’s a play on words. “It’s best to use caution when painting wildlife.” Still life refers to any subject that doesn’t move: bowls of fruit, vases of flowers, a shoe, an umbrella stand, a painter’s palette and brushes, an empty room… Wild still life would be something that doesn’t move put outdoors. I like Kedamono explanation more than my own.

There’s no reason to fear fruit in a bowl, but if a man were to attack you with a piece of fresh fruit, how would you defend yourself?

I love the guy’s resigned hyper-caution, like he’s thinking, “15 years to retirement, just be careful, they can smell fear, the banana will turn this way if it’s going to charge, you’ll have at least 10 seconds to run and they have no stamina, c’mon, you can do this, 15 years to retirement … “

This reminds me of a Shel Silverstein poem… “Are wild strawberries really wild? Will they scratch an adult, will they snap at a child?”
