I rarely read this strip, but I seem to recall a reoccuring gag with a talking Sarah Palin doll. And this must be a rerun from last year–the “that’s so last month” comment implies 2008, not 2009.

It’s an arcane reference to the thousands of dollars of clothes that the RNC bought Palin at the convention that then had to be returned but were never properly accounted for.

cleaning out “the belly of the plane” was part of her rambling, quasi-Checkers speech about the clothes and where they went, as i vaguely recall …

Sarah Palin, 7 Nov 20008: “There is no clothes audit except for when the belly of the plane got all cleaned out. All the piles of clothes they had in there, they wanted me at my house to go through it and box things up and send it. We should have done that when we were in Arizona, because we had half a day. Yeah, I was doing that last night… But I heard, too, on the news, there were attorneys coming out to do such a thing [audit the clothes]. There are no attorneys coming up. There’s no need for it or anything else.”

Today’ s Doonesbury makes it clear he’s aware of how out-of-date those remarks are by now. The Sarah doll needed an online update.
