I have often thought the punchline to Dilbert in reference to gift cards -- If I get you a gift card for $50.00 and you get me a gift card for $50.00 what is the point. I think it says "I have to give you something, but I haven't a clue what to get you, so I got you this" ... Shouldn't we know the people we want to buy presents for well enough to actually pick something out ?

My wife and I are sufficiently synchronized that we've gotten each other the same card at Christmas.

The first strip also shows not only people simultaneously giving and getting what they both want, but also discovering a common interest they never knew they had, thereby deepening their friendship. It's kind of sweet actually, even if the whole "bacon" joke is tremendously overwrought.

This is something our family has joked about (half-seriously, I swear) for years.

We should just calculate the value of what each person was going to give the others, figure out the differences, and just settle up at the end.

So if my dad was going to give me $50, and I was going to give him a $20 gift, then we just forego all that and he just gives me $30. Only we'd also take into account all the family... so if my dad would end up owing me $30, but I owed my brother $30, then my dad would just give the $30 to my brother. Unless my brother also ended up owing my dad $30, in which case we'd all work out even.

My brother is an accountant. He likes the idea...

I've never gotten someone the same thing they got me, though if I did get someone bacon I hope they would reciprocate.

"Weak Sauce" - GIYF, I found it on Urban Dictionary.

Rainey: Strips 2 & 3 show that futility. Strip 1 shows something else.
"I'd never buy this for myself, because it's too costly or self-indulgent,
but it'll make a fine gift." ... "Oh, wow, I got this as a gift. Win-win."
(Repeat same thoughts for second person.)

This concept really isn't anything new. This happens very often with gift exchanges. Especially among people with similar tastes. These comics serve to demonstrate the futility of the tradition of swapping gifts. This is one reason I don't do it.
