The last one is surprisingly dark humor if you know that it’s probably based on a famous quotation about the Nazis.
CIDU Bill Dec 25th 2009 at 12:59 am 2
IS it even funny if you don’t know the Niemoeller quote?
Brian Leahy Dec 25th 2009 at 01:39 am 3
I have the 2nd one on a tee-shirt, which I’m wearing right now….
aoeu Dec 25th 2009 at 01:49 am 4
Well, um, why are there the two trees still standing?
Brian Leahy Dec 25th 2009 at 01:53 am 5
Well, at SOME point there had to be just 2 trees left…

Click my name above to see a pic of my tee shirt of cartoon #2….

I like that Brian. Reminds me of the old joke about Rudolph coming home with his school report card and his parents lamenting about how he went down in History.

I wonder if the second comic was written by an I-Mockery fan. Note to Bill, also: Apostrophies do not indicate plurals!
Cidu Bill Dec 25th 2009 at 06:26 pm 9
Yes I know, less reality, which is why I refer to “LOLs.” In the case of “Noelol’s,” though, I gritten my teeth and added the apostrophe because I decided the made-up word would not scan well the proper way.

I am sorry for kind of insulting you, I had, just, read several very poorly-written things on other websites, and I was a bit annoyed. I think you are a good writer.
Cidu Bill Dec 26th 2009 at 12:20 am 11
I saw no insult there: it was a reasonable comment.
Keera Dec 26th 2009 at 06:15 am 12
Bill, I would have written it as NoeLOLs. Or hyphened the s.
BTW, the dog and cat and mistletoe one needed a beverage warning.

Some things do get the apostrophe for the plural, as in “There are two L’s in NoeLOL.”
Mitch4 Dec 27th 2009 at 07:34 am 14
But see the Chicago Manual of Style for some good non-apostrophe options. (Though I have to admit my copy is a couple of editions out of date.) If you’re copy-editing for an actual printed book or document, or at any rate can really trust how your font and face choices will be rendered, you can represent symbols standing for themselves with something like italics, and then the pluralizing -s will be distinguished from the self-quoting symbol by being Roman or upright. Thus: There are two Ls in “NoeLOL”.

@ CIDU Bill (2) - I now remember reading the quote (long ago), but even though I had forgotten it, I think the tree joke still works without it. The cartoon sort of reminded me of Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax”.
