One of those rare cases where the metatext actually adds to — and is funnier than — the comic itself: “Physicists who want to protect traditional Christmas realize that the only way to keep from changing Christmas is not to observe it.”

Okay, if I understand this correctly… Mrs Olsen gets a headache every Christmas season — it’s not stated in the comic that she only gets headaches only during the Christmas season, but that’s implied by the third panel — which the girl attributes to a pine tree allergy but which Frazz knows to be due to a Little Drummer Boy ornament? Which he knows about but Mrs Olsen hasn’t made the connection?

The first two panels comprise a set-up and punchline. The third panel baffles me.

Did newspapers really find this offensive enough

that they had to replace it with this?

And keep in mind this is a strip in which we come pretty close to seeing actual copulation on a regular basis.

Laurie B. Wylie: Is there something I don’t know about the life cycle of moths versus that of any other specific insect? And if moths were indeed sold at a regular pet store like this seems to be, wouldn’t they probably be intended to wind up as food for some other pet (probably reptile)?
