Chak: Is there a joke in there somewhere that I’m just too dense to get? Yeah, all have ‘ice’ in the name. And?

It would make more sense if it was common to have a sign that said “ice cubes” pointing to the ice-cubes at parties. Then it’s just a joke about labeling things that aren’t typically labeled. However, “ice cubes” is not a common sign, so I’m just as stumped as Chak.

I think the difference is that “Ice Queen” is a slang expression, and the other two are “proper” descriptions. The joke just falls flat because there is no reasonable expectation we should see labels in one case and not the other.

It could have just as easily been, “air conditioner”, “air freshener” and “air-head”.

Maybe she is the lord of all the icy things she surveys, as labeled in the picture? Hence, she’s the “ice queen.”

    Yeah, I’ve got nothing.

Ice queen = cold bitch. That’s it. No additional joke. Judge Mental has got the general idea.

    Maybe it’s a dig at an ex…

The ‘air-conditioner, -freshener, -head’ joke is the same as this ‘ice-storm, -cubes, -queen’ one. But it’s winter, therefore ‘ice’.

Look; it’s just a gag on the “ice queen” term. Now can you PLEASE get back on why Hammie asks santa about Hannuka?? THAT has me baffled.

what has me baffled is why the Zits santa is wearing black

Pirk - because daily comics generally aren’t drawn (or inked) with color in mind, even though apparently they’ve started coloring them now. Coloring it black makes sense in a drawing that uses black and white (and no grays or shading).

When the colorist gets the strip, he can’t simply recolor it red because there are no outlines. The colorist would have to (digitally) erase all the black except for an outline, which is difficult and time-consuming. They probably don’t have the time or money to justify that, so the result is he still wears black in color.

Yet one more reason why they should just leave the dailies in black and white…

Bill - if they’d given the comic your title, the lack of punchline would have been covered. :-)

Ice queen, you squeen, we all squeen for Ice queen.

Actually, there’s no reason to make red black in black-and-white, and since you know some newspapers and websites are going to color it, it makes more sense to leave the red suit uncolored. And when printed in black-and-white, uncolored uses less ink.

Maybe the artist needs to submit two versions: one to be printed black-and-white, and one to colored in.

Thank you Dan. My subconscious kept coming back to this comic with the notion there was some line I still needed to hear. Now it can be put to rest.
