Hot Dog (Arlo?)
Cidu Bill on Dec 7th 2009

James King: This 9 Chickweed Lane is either an Arlo or a CIDU… And I’m pretty sure I get it. Because I sincerely doubt Brooke McEldowney would either miss the innuendo of the hotdog, or leave it in if it wasn’t intentional.OK, ‘leave it in’ mightn’t be the best phrasing, considering….

I have to admit that the hot dog reference got me wondering too. Then the image of Rita Hayworth giving it to her came into my mind and I got a little hot and bothered.

Innuendo aside, I think there’s also a non-Arlo interpretation: that Rita immediately started thinking of Edna as an innocent little girl and treated her as one (”here’s a snack, honey”).

That’s Edna??

It’s Edna (Gran) as a young woman in WWII. It’s part of a (most likely many months long) flashback showing what Gran did (or who Gran did) during the war.

Reminds me of a Family Guy episode where Meg takes a pack of hot dogs to her room and is going to pretend that they represent the New York Knicks.

I suppose a hot dog is a food item a little girl might prefer, like a grilled-cheese sandwich, as opposed to pate de foie gras or asparagus spears.
Or maybe Miss Hayworth wanted to see what she’d do with it.
You remember the story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson walking past three women who were sitting on a park bench eating bananas. “Good morning, Ladies,” said Holmes.
Watson:”I say, Holmes. Do you know those ladies?”
Holmes: “No, my dear Watson; I have never seen that nun, that prostitute or that newly-wedded bride in my life.”
Watson: “How on earth do you know what they are?”
Holmes: “By simple observation. Look: the nun is cutting the banana into small slices with a knife before eating it. The prostitute is trying to cram the entire thing into her mouth. And the newly-wedded bride is holding the banana in front of her mouth with her left hand while her right hand is behind her head pushing it down.”

Which comes back to the idea of Brooke either missing the innuendo inherent in the choice of such a phallic food, rather than something like a chocolate bar, or leaving it in despite seeing it, but not intending it.
I do suspect, though, that Edna missed it. What with her being virginal and all.

The only place she would be likely to run into Rita Hayworth during WW2 would be at the Hollywood Canteen on Cahuenga Blvd. In that case, the hot dog would be in context as the place offered food and entertainment. Now if Rita Hayworth has offered Edna a doughnut, that would’ve taken the joke to another level.

I support the doughnut.

What if she were offered both a doughnut AND a hot dog? What then?

Sometimes a hotdog is just a hotdog.

Totally unrelated, but god that first panel gave me a weird case of vertigo.
