I think the square word balloon suggests an ice cube. Toni's word balloon is round, so isn't hiding a veiled insult. On the other hand, in real life, Toni would eventually dump Brad for Dirk or someone like him. Mom had twenty boyfriends? I don't even think the girls from Friends racked up that many conquests. And we are talking the eighties now. What's that make mom? (When did I catch up in age with cartoon parents?) I thought Nancy (the mom) was unbelieveably rude during the dinner while Toni seemed to be making every attempt to bond on some level with her. Your choice of words was very appropriate, at least relative to the mom.
