In Reality, a Very Arlo Thanksgiving

Many people asked me how the hell Dave Whamond slipped this one past the syndicate:

If Dave Whamond really had guts, he would have used the male turkey’s come-on line….”Nice breast.”

As a take off of a Mae West classic from the the ’30s(?) it has a grandmothered immunity from censorship.

Yep, it was the 1930s. I’m not any less surprised that they let it through, though. From what I’ve always seen, the syndicates are very strict. Plenty of stuff you can say on prime time TV — when plenty of kids can be assumed to be watching, even if they’re not the target audience — is super taboo in the comics.

Thanksgiving fumble fingers, Bill? This has a “Srlo Award” tag.

Of course, birds don’t actually have ‘pop-up timers’.

Frank the carmudgeon: So what if the line was used in the 1930’s. Sex existed and was well known since life began on this planet but try getting an image of two people having sex on a children’s program! ( or even in the newspaper comics )

“Of course, birds don’t actually have ‘pop-up timers’.”

Some do-such as ducks. Analogous to the mammalian structure, but very similar.

“I’m the girl who works for Paramount all day, and Fox all night!”

    – Mae West, but it was in Sextette, in 1978, and so was the “gun in your pocket” line. But we knew about the “gun in your pocket” line long before, so she must have used it on stage in the 1920’s or 1930’s.

According to Wikipedia, “Is that a pistol in your pocket” is from the 1932 film “She Done Him Wrong”.

  10. furrykef Nov 27th 2009 at 02:55 am 10

But it was used in Sextette, too, as a callback to that earlier film.

Is that a Chapstick in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

  12. The Good Seed Nov 27th 2009 at 06:28 pm 12

    It’s just chapstick.

  13. Mark in Boston Nov 28th 2009 at 02:09 am 13

Ah, yes, from that classic trilogy: “He Did Her Wrong”, “She Did Him Wrong”, “They Did It Wrong”.

  14. Fred Nov 28th 2009 at 09:07 am 14

“Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?”

    “Actually, both.”

    BANG!

Morris, you sharp-eyed guy! Maybe the Srlo Award category is for purifying the Argyle Sewater?
