She’s not even looking at the eye chart, but rather the human anatomy chart.
The Dr has doubts about how she got to his office.

Actually, she’s looking in a mirror.

This was a mild LOL for me. I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen old ladies barely able to see their hands in front of their face, but still insist they can drive. Stay off the road when one weaves your way. (It’s also why they drive reeaaaal slow) The Doc is being sarcastic “Drove here all by yourself, huh?” just before he revokes her right to drive.

why’d she strip to take an eye exam?
TasmanSea Nov 10th 2009 at 01:33 am 5
Agree that the joke is old people driving with bad vision. But, Pirk, I too was distracted by the gown…. Just supposed to emphasize the medical setting in case we thought she was doing an eye test in a bar or something?

Most doctors give seniors eye exams as part of their yearly physical. If the senior holds a driver’s license, it’s mandatory in some places (like here), especially over 75. A lot of seniors go ten years or more between optometrist’s appointments, so family doctors have to take up the slack.

“Yes, I’m an old woman with no one to help me get anywhere. Happy now, Patch Adams?”
mkilby Nov 10th 2009 at 03:59 am 8
@ Pirk - I think the hospital gown is supposed to mean that she ducked out of the hospital (or nursing home) to drive all by herself to the eye doctor. I also don’t think the joke needed this detail, it would have worked just as well with normal “Granny” attire.

I think Charlene’s right. It’s not a trip to the eye doctor; it’s just a part of a full physical. Because since when do eye doctors have full-body anatomy posters on their wall?
Suzii Nov 10th 2009 at 05:30 am 10
Or, for that matter, stethoscopes?
Stan Nov 10th 2009 at 07:10 am 11
I’d like to see that doctor get his comeuppance when she begins to read all the fine print on that anatomy poster. Sarcastic twit.

@NoThereYet - Driving is a privilege, not a right. Or so I was constantly reminded by every adult I ever knew after I turned 16…
Christ, that was 16 years ago. My driver’s license is now old enough to drive!

One of my favorite jokes:
Little old lady walks into a business and says to the woman behind the counter, “I need to see the eye doctor.” The woman responds, “You sure do, honey, this is a hardware store.”
Michael Brown Nov 10th 2009 at 06:41 pm 14
“They’re trying to take our licenses!!”
“We should have a seniors meeting about this!”
Rasheed Nov 11th 2009 at 11:39 am 15
Right behind you, Steven Hunter. I guess my license should be getting it’s learner’s permit.
Elyrest Nov 11th 2009 at 01:57 pm 16
Jeepers! My license is old enough to be your license’s mother.
paperboy Nov 11th 2009 at 07:49 pm 17
My license is so old it’s carved in a stone.
Jeff S. Nov 12th 2009 at 12:37 am 18
@Pirk… If she’s JUST taking an eye exam, why is there an anatomy chart on the wall? She’s at her annual physical, and the eye exam is just part of it.
bAT L. Nov 12th 2009 at 03:10 am 19
I think I see the joke here (wow, no pun intended), and I don’t think any of the above comments hit on it just yet. She must have said, just before this scene, “I don’t see why I need an eye exam; I drove here all by myself after all.”
