Nicole nominated this one for a double Geezer award: “Gomer Pyle was canceled (cough cough) forty years ago in 1969, and the Longest Day was a movie that came out in 1962. Was the plan to make sure half of the population did not get the comic?”

They can look it up in their Funk and Wagnalls.

What’s funny is that I got every reference in this strip without giving it a second thought, so I guess I qualify for the award. You can mail it me in care of the ol’ folks home.

And stepping up for the Triple Geezer award:

Gomer Pyle always said “Surprise, surprise, surprise!” They’re one surprise short.

And you damn kids get off the lawn! Go tweet yourselves!

Gomer Pyle may have been cancelled 40 years ago but it lived on for many many years in syndication on TBS (among many others I am sure) so it isn’t *completely* unknown.

I haven’t seen “The Longest Day” but I know of it. Heck, every kid in I went to elementary school with has seen “Battle of the Bulge” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058947/ at least once because it was on TV numerous times when we were growing up. And that was from 1965 even though none of us were. We all loved that movie.

Well Gooooolly, who knew so many people would remember Gomer Pyle.

Regardless of syndication, I still think that prehaps he could have come up with slightly more current references .. and today’s strip references the Godfather .. better than Gomer Pyle, but still rather dated

Ah, the magic of Nick at Nite. Importing geezers’ entertainment to kids these days since 1985.

The Encore channels routinely replay “The Longest Day”, esp. during military holidays such as June 6th…

The kid on the left shouldn’t criticize, he’s got Goober hair. All he needs is the little Jughead hat.

I think we’re all one surprise short with this one. (Thanks to Frosted Donut.)

Do you even need to know “The Longest Day”? I don’t think I’ve seen it; I just thought they were playing off the title. If the dogs are going to be incessantly mocked then it’s going to be an extremely long day…

Okay… how come this references The Longest Day? I get the Gomer reference (the “surprise, surprise” part, I suppose), but why The Longest Day? Why not, I dunno, Saving Private Ryan, or Platoon, or Apocalypse Now?
