I don’t know why everything in Arlo and Janis needs to have a sexual connotation. It could just be a comment on aging, in general, or it could be a wistful desire to have things the way they used to be, including less structured baseball (without a warning track, DH, etc.). Personally, I think he’s just lamenting the changes that come with aging, in general.

I think part of what’s puzzling non-sports fans (like me) is the term “warning track.” It refers to the part of the outfield between the fence and where the grassy part of the field ends. If you hit the ball over the wall, it’s a home run. If it’s “caught on the warning track” then the outfielder caught it just short of the wall (and you’re out).

(It’s called a “warning track” because the change from grass to dirt is supposed to warn the outfielder that they’re about to run into the wall.)

It’s a popular past-time of sports fans to imagine themselves making a clutch play. Arlo is sort of getting old, I guess, that even in his imagination he was unable to get the game-running home-run. The humor, such as it is, is that even though it’s his fantasy and he can make the game end any way he wants, he imagined himself getting out and then was wondering what went wrong.

Arlo looks like he’s playing baseball on the Nintendo Wii. He’s lamenting that he more power when he was younger. Of course, this being an Arlo and Janis strip, it’s probably also a nod to his sexual prowess.
