Several people asked me — and rightfully so — whether it’s idiomatically common in some areas of the United States to refer to something failing or going out of business (in this case Gourmet magazine) as “getting the ziggy.” My best guess is that it refers to the recently-bankrupt financial firm Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner Smith and Ziggy, but I suspect that’s really a very poor guess.

Sexist or Not?

Sarah Palin complained that this week’s Newsweek cover is sexist, and… well, I think I sort of agree, though we might be dealing with semantics here: Certainly Newsweek chose this particular photo with the inten of trivializing Palin (the photo is real, but was taken earlier this year as part of a spread for Runner’s World magazine). And they probably wouldn’t have used this sort of photo to trivialize a male politician (can you imagine a cover story about Obama’s domestic policy agenda being illustrated with this?
So if using a “sexy” cover photo of a female politician is a context where you wouldn’t use one of a male politician is sexist, then I find myself in the odd position of siding with Palin.
Of course what I found most interesting about all this was Palin’s comment on the cover, ending with “If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin” — clear proof, I guess, that she writes her own material. I mean, I sort of maybe know what she’s kind of getting at here, but…
And actually what makes that quote more interesting is the fact that it was written (apparently) on the same day that she vigorously defended racial profiling on the Sean Hannity show.

Carl Fink: So, the joke here is that … two guys dressed in bad period Wright Brothers costumes, wearing goggles indoors and next to a very silly scale model of a biplane from a period long after the Wright Flyer (Notice the wheels, front prop and modern tail), are confronting some business people behind a table? With a Wright Brothers poster behind them?Is this supposed to be a movie pitch? And would that make the blue-suit guy’s line funny?

Cookies I Don’t Understand

I don’t see anything wrong with Christmas decorations going on sale in September or October — if I put up Christmas decorations, I’m sure I’d buy them that early (and then not get around to putting them up unti late on December 24) — but what’s with bakeries selling Christmas cookies and cupcakes the first in November? These are fresh items which will be inedible within a week. Does anybody buy them?

Rasheed: Completely coincidental, of course, with 6-8 weeks of lead time, but in light of the Fort Hood tragedy, I think they coulda/shoulda pulled this strip. But I’m a biased Texan who has also happened to have worked there.
Several people made the same comment about this week’s Depressed Wally and His Gun storyline in Funky Winkerbean.
