Two Girls One Cup
Cidu Bill on Oct 31st 2009
Okay, obviously this is common enough that at least two comics ran the same gag Saturday. Do I even want to know?

The phrase is the title of a shock video. It is really, really, revoltingly disgusting. You don’t want to know any more than that. It’s easy to find out more, of course, but as a fellow human being I urge you to resist any temptation to google it.
As point of comparison, if the term “goatse” means anything to you, trust me that 2 Girls is unbelievably worse.

Which is why I am completely dumbfounded by the fact that the man was found “smiling.” A smile is definitely NOT the most common reaction to Two Girls/One Cup.
Fnord Oct 31st 2009 at 01:07 am 3
He was smiling when he asked about their costume. When they answered, his entire body siezed in place, freezing the same expression on his face for all time.

Well, I had to Google it - sorry Fnord, curiosity and all that. Honestly, I had never heard of it before. But I did stick to the Wikipedia hit. Bill, you really don’t want to know.
I should be slightly embarrassed that old Herbert Feegelman knew about it and I didn’t, but unlike him I can live with it.

Maybe the girls went on to act out the 2 Girls 1 Cup thing.

The meme seems to be everywhere this holiday season.

Bill, the answer to “Do I even want to know” is a resounding no, as you’ve already figured out, and your intuition that you might prefer to be left in innocence was entirely correct. If you still have curiosity but, being a sane human being, prefer not to see the video yourself, search for “two girls one cup” on Youtube. You won’t see the original, but you will see a great many reaction videos, showing people watching the original for the first time. Some of them are pretty funny.
Two girls one cup is very 2007, so I guess it isn’t surprising that cartoonists are just now getting around to reacting to it.

I didn’t think it was that bad. I watched it while eating sesame chicken.
Can’t say the same for normal people, though, especially if you have any sort of gag reflex.
chuckers Oct 31st 2009 at 05:21 am 9
As has been stated, you definitely DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!
DON’T GOOGLE IT!
Brent Oct 31st 2009 at 05:51 am 10
@bAT L.:
Yeah, I also happened to be eating when I saw it the first time. Didn’t phase me, partially because I was already desensitized to the Internet before 1997.
Although nothing anyone has ever said or anything I’ve ever seen has put me off of my food for as long as I can remember… probably because I’m not capable of eating many vegetables, so I’ve lived a life surrounded by people eating things that are the equivalent of “houseplants” in my book. When you see people eating things that are not food and would make you sick enough to throw up, you quickly learn to compartmentalize what you’re eating from things you see and hear.

The mudslide is a lovely detail.

Sili,
You’re right. Best part of the joke.

Two girls one cup is very 2007, so I guess it isn’t surprising that cartoonists are just now getting around to reacting to it.
Both of these are webcomics, though. Webcartoonists usually don’t take two years to react to memes (and many of them take more like two seconds). In the case of the Girls With Slingshots strip, though, I think this may be part of the joke: before then, Hazel and Clarice went online to “look up some famous internet stuff”, which pretty much illustrates their cluelessness about internet memes.
Anyway, even though the meme started in 2007, I imagine many people didn’t learn about until 2008. Not everybody hangs around the same parts of the internet, y’know, and — as illustrated by this thread — there are still some people who don’t know about it. (And, though they don’t know it, they’re all the happier for it.)

I have only an idea what ‘two girls and a cup’ is about .. and no you don’t want to know … really
Morris Keesan Oct 31st 2009 at 11:03 am 15
This kind of reaction (”you don’t want to know”) really surprises me. The first time I came across it, with that kind of warning, I of course wanted to know. It wasn’t that big a deal, and I stopped watching as soon as it got gross, but honestly, I would have preferred to see a description so I could have avoided wasting my time finding and watching the video.
For those who would like to know without having to be totally grossed out, here’s a thumbnail description of the video, encrypted with “rot13″:
Gjb tveyf. Bar bs gurz qrsrpngrf vagb n cynfgvp phc. Gur bgure bar rngf vg jvgu n fcbba.
(If you’re not familiar with “rot13″: it’s a simple substitution cypher where each letter is replaced with the letter 13 away from it in the alphabet. Standard Internet method of weak encryption, dating back more than 20 years, designed to be trivial to decrypt, but to let you avoid reading things you don’t want to, like the solutions to puzzles.)
Keera Oct 31st 2009 at 12:10 pm 16
Thank you, Morris! Now I can actually laugh at the two comics.
Elyrest Oct 31st 2009 at 12:46 pm 17
I didn’t understand the The Far Left Side when I ead it yesterday, but forgot to send it in. I have no idea what this refers to and I guess I am better off for not knowing so I will just back away slowly.
Dave Oct 31st 2009 at 02:12 pm 18
I saw the original video awhile back, and it looked obviously fake to me… just me?
Chuck Oct 31st 2009 at 03:26 pm 19
Never saw the original video. Just saw a creepy fan drawing, and of course the t-shirt showing Peach and Daisy with a mushroom that said “Two Girls One Up.”
Fnord Oct 31st 2009 at 06:28 pm 20
Morris: You’ve only seen the short version.
zbicyclist Oct 31st 2009 at 09:05 pm 21
I had never heard of this, but couldn’t resist “you don’t want to know”.
Like the advice upthread, I stuck to the Wikipedia version and I’m glad I did.
Morris Keesan Oct 31st 2009 at 10:40 pm 22
Fnord: I don’t know which version I’ve seen. I described it up until the point when I stopped watching. Later today I looked at the Wikipedia entry, and see that there’s more that I don’t at all mind having missed.
chuckers Nov 1st 2009 at 05:09 am 23
Dave,
I am pretty sure it was fake as well but that is the only way I could have convinced
myself to watch it to the bitter end.
Fake or not, it is still gag inducing.
Jeff S. Nov 1st 2009 at 08:02 am 24
According to Wiki, there’s more. Using Morris’ rot13…
Nsgre rngvat vg nyy, gur frpbaq tvey guebjf hc vagb gur phc naq gura gurl funer vg.
Aaron Nov 1st 2009 at 11:14 am 25
“Fake” in that it was probably some sort of chocolate substance rather than the “real thing”, but really, does that make it any better?
Nicole Nov 1st 2009 at 11:30 am 26
Fake or real is a moot point. Horror films scares us when we know they are not real — gross activities make us want to gag real or not. It is the the thought that scares us or makes us vomit …. not the reality.
eeyore19 Nov 1st 2009 at 01:41 pm 27
Here’s a video for Unicorn Chaser, to help you forget all about “Two Girls, One Cup”:

“Fake or real” is not a moot point. The assertion that someone actually did ‘that’ for real would be truly disturbing, even enlightening about just how low homo sapiens can and will go, for a buck, or a thrill/fetish.
But if it’s not real, it’s just an idea with shock value.
Movies can be disturbingly entertaining, but not truly disturbing, because you ultimately know it’s just a movie (the Saw movies, Seven, Reservoir Dogs come to mind).
What Mengela did, that’s truly disturbing.
Keera Nov 1st 2009 at 01:51 pm 29
@Aaron, LOL!
Keera Nov 1st 2009 at 01:52 pm 30
Sorry, not Aaron, but eeyore19! You get the LOL!
(Aaron, you naughty boy, why are you haunting my thoughts?)
Nicole Nov 1st 2009 at 02:52 pm 31
Dave … you are of course correct … if it is real then it become more disturbing — the point I was trying to make it that staged events can evoke the same feelings as real events
Michael Nov 1st 2009 at 09:57 pm 32
Here’s where I learned about “Two Girls One Cup”: http://xkcd.com/467/ (it’s just an xkcd strip… nothing gross).
