I'm extra-amused by this one...because I imagine that Brooke's not skipping over Seth's comments, but rather Edda is intuiting what he would be saying if he wasn't being all grumpy and silent.

Seth's not going to leave a lit candle on a table, even if he's upset.

Grand Gignol may have started with puppets, but it evolved into theater with live actors. It included drama, comedy and sex-melodrama. It was known mainly for its gorey special effects. Edda is sayin that Seth's eyes light up in a grand gignol sort of way.

Also, given other things were seen Seth do (like the wedding dress), I'd expect a much more elaborate carving from him. (_I_ do much more elaborate pumpkins, and I have no observable arts & crafts skills...)

And very atypical of Seth to leave a lit candle on the table, where it's sure to damage the finish.

If the last panel where the cat pops out of the pumpkin was right after the one where Seth looks into the pumkin it would have been perfectly clear what was going on. The way it is laid out, the joke is that you don't know what they are arguing about till the last panel.

BTW -- living with three cats I would not be so sure that Edda did put the cat in the pumpkin. My cats will often curl up in small confined spaces ... admittedly they might not choose a pumpkin because of the mess -- but I wouln't put it toally passed them.

Speaking of the mess ... the cat is amazingly clean for having been in a pumpkin

The joke is pretty weak - Seth thinks Edda put the cat in the pumpkin. I rather like the sneaky way it was presented, though (with only her responses).

Rebecca - the Grand Guignol was (apparently, I just googled it) a puppet show that specialized in horror. The phrase is usually used to refer to horrific images/events. So she's talking about him slicing up the pumpkin as torture... I knew the phrase but not where it came from.

I guess Seth hates both cats and tables. If I were about to put a candle into a cat-filled pumpkin (or lay it down on the table), I would at least blow out the candle first.

The cat pooped in the Jack-o'-Lantern? I got nothin'.

Incidentally, what's that word in the first panel? "grand guignol light"?
