My best guess is that 1, 2 and 3 look the most alike so it seems odd that she’d be undecided between 2 and the very-dissimilar 4 — but I don’t consider that a particularly good guess…

Bill - I think that’s supposed to be the joke. There really isn’t any way that she would be confused between 2 and 4.
Maybe it’s supposed to be ironic.

I feel like this might be another one that you understand fine but it just isn’t very funny. That’s my best guess too. Maybe helps that eye witness identification is known to be unreliable?

I thought it was funny.

Absurd, not ironic.

Morris - the ironic was a joke.

Absurdist farce. Sometimes it’s funny, often it’s not.
Just look at all the groaners you gotta go through in Herman to get to the ones that make it well worth that.

this is going to seem silly, but the fact that number 4 is holding his sign instead of wearing it really threw me off. I kept thinking ‘did he just walk in or something? is the real number 4 bound and gagged in a broom closet?”

Number 4 thought this was the deli.

I like it, Jeff S.! he thinks he’s holding that 4 because it’s his order number

This reminds me of an old “Far Side” cartoon where a woman at a line-up said, “Yes! That’s him! I’d recognize that silly little hat anywhere!” Although all the other people in the line-up looked relatively normal, she was pointing at a giant mutated elephant wearing a propeller beanie.
