“He’s drilling and you hear him make a mistake:

Maybe the being on the lam isn’t figurative. Maybe they really have been in hiding so long that they have bad teeth, and he’s really saying that he can’t stand the pain anymore, and would rather go to a dentist and get his teeth fixed, even though that means having to turn themselves in.

I used to go to one dentist until, while drilling on a tooth, actually said, “Oops.” Not the thing a patient wants to hear. He was removing a filling and was going to replace it, when he broke off the back portion of that molar. The thing that really pissed me off was, he didn’t even tell me what happened when I asked. I found out what happened after I cut my tongue on the jagged edge of my tooth. Needless to say, I called him and quit doing business with him.

Powers has it right. No cavities, but I had severe gingivitis for not seeing a dentist for several years. Learned my lesson, see them once every 6 months to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Same here, yellojkt, but that doesn’t mean I recommend it to anyone else. No cavities, but gingivitis had taken hold. Dentists — well, the hygienists, at least — do a lot more these days than just a cleaning.

I went five years without a dentist while in college and had no cavities. While that is a minor miracle, a lot of dentists just create work for themselves.

Ah! I was thinking they needed to have themselves identified by dental impressions.
All the other explanations make WAY more sense.

Yeah, my husband avoided the dentist for over a decade, and then I finally convinced him to go.

Actually, the upshot of it wasn’t too bad. But we did have to space out all the work he needed done.
