If it’s jail, I’d guess his reaction was to quickly remove his pants. But it looks like prison so maybe he reacted by killing everybody in the place.

I’m surprised he’s not in hospital, after repeatedly pounding his fist into his lap, while screaming . . .

    Istsy bitsy spider … .

Knee Jerk reaction. He reacted to the spider by violently kicking his legs. Since he was in a crowded restaurant, this resulted in him also kicking several of the other patrons, thus leading to his jailing for assault.

I suspect it’s simply a case where the joke isn’t that funny.

Um, I think it’s an “ewww.” Kept “slapping” his “lap”…

Your (well my) first reaction to seeing any kind of bug on me is to swat it. If it were in his lap, the spider wouldn’t be the only thing he swats.

My first reaction to seeing a spider in my lap is to leap up, screaming at the top of my lungs, banging my chair into the person at the table behind me, upending my own table, spilling everything on it on to my date, then getting mad at the manager of the restaurant when he tries to throw me out because it was a SPIDER in HIS restaurant, for F**KS SAKE, so of course I hit him!!!!!!!!!

I think the humor in this is that it leaves the reader to imagine all sorts of reaction to a spider in his lap. There’s nothing the stripper (as Opus calls the job of writing comics) could put in that would be better than the reader’s guesses.

My own guess is that he freaked out, stripped off his pants (’cause maybe there are more spiders you can’t see), and then started running around the restaurant, pantless, screaming at the top of his lungs.

I agree with Jeff Schwarz, but my first thought was that he’s in prison for yelling “SPIDER!”, when everyone thought he was yelling “FIRE!” The mention of the “Crowded Restaurant” led me to that. So, boys and girls, never yell Spider in a crowded restaurant.

    I’m with Annie Benson - it’s a literal knee-jerk reaction.

  12. Keera Sep 29th 2009 at 12:56 pm 12

With us arachnophobes, yelling “Spider!” is the same as yelling “Fire!”.

  13. Elyrest Sep 29th 2009 at 01:24 pm 13

Living with an arachnophobe I can imagine almost anything happening. I’ve almost been knocked down on more than one occasion because I was between the spider and the door. I will admit to jumping out of bed when I’ve discovered a spider in there with me, but that’s only common sense.

Have you seen how cool the Pope remained while a spider was crawling all over him?

These explanations make sense, but something about the comic’s layout suggests to me that the “I” in the caption is actually the guy on the right, as if his future reaction to the spider story is the knee-jerk reaction he’d rather take back. I can’t imagine what that reaction would be, however, so maybe it’s just me.

Lihtox - I like the thought of your interpretation. Still, the strip is always about the guy on the left (his distinctive hair-do being often obscured by a hat); and this prison layout has been used before with the caption unmistakeably being his narration.

Since most of us would merely brush the spider off, I feel the other prisoner might be wondering just how crazy this guy can get that he would be arrested (i.e. significantly beyond swatting once at his parts).

ah, yeah I totally didn’t understand the thing about the knee-jerk reaction.
I thought that because he had been in prison for a while, he lost the reflex to jump up when he saw a spider in his lap.

I’ve a pretty big fear of spiders. When I get one on my jacket you can bet that my jacket is going to fly off my back while I stomp all over it to ensure the spider has died. It’s a knee-jerk reaction I have to spiders on my coats. Maybe this guy has the same reaction when it’s on his pants?

My hub was sitting around with friends on a camping trip once when a wasp flew up his pantleg.

Apparently his friends were rather bemused when he suddenly jumped up and stripped off his pants.

How big a spider are we talking here?

  21. Umaike Nov 1st 2009 at 01:37 pm 21

My guess is that he’s in the slammer for murder.

‘Cause he killed the spider, you see, and there were lots of witnesses.
