Whoops: the Lincoln-Douglas debates were in 1858, and Douglas won that race, for US Senate from Illinois. (And yeah, 1861 sure counts as "soon after" 1858, but the main comic specifically refers to 1860.) So, in conclusion: tpjim 10, xkcd 8. *Does little victory dance* @Powers: D’oh.
