Ticket To Ride

Yeah, we definitely need a tag for gratuitous, over-reactions. What is it about comic strips characters that the most seemingly innocuous comments are likely to result in threats, thrown items, or being chased about with the obvious intent to do serious bodily harm?

My guess is that the cartoonists are overstretching for a laugh and often miss. It makes me think that there are a lot of angry people in Toonland. I usually take a skip on this particular comic because while it is titled Real Life Adventures it usually veers to Cruel Life Adventures. Not a good advertisement for marriage.

If you can’t over-react in a cartoon, where can you? And what Elyrest said. All of it.

I don’t think this is all that much of an overreaction; it’s just a humorously overstated way of saying “no”, not an actual threat.

Furrykef, that would make sense if she’d said “Sure, when you’re riding in a hearse.” What she said, though, was that if he rode in the back now, his NEXT ride would be in a hearse.
And honestly, why should she care either way and why should he be asking permission? What is this, Anal-Retentive Adventures?

The request seems so childish the man appears a bit retarded, which makes her reaction not funny.

let’s not forget goggle-eyed over-reactions of utter horror to things that are mostly trite, banal, or poor puns.

With a request like that, makes me wonder whether he hasn’t dreamed of applying for TARP money.

By “in back”, does he mean the trunk? This could be potentially dangerous in a sealed trunk. This could also be dangerous if the driver is a poor one.

Perhaps the context here is that she doesn’t want to be treated as a servant - which might happen at home, with cooking, cleaning, etc? It is odd, anyway, since most guys insist on driving no matter what.

First, when the one who is supposed to be your partner starts treating you like a servant, it can get to be a very big deal, very quickly. Especially if you’re a menobabe, which she looks to be.

The weird part to me is that he’s already IN the back.

For Better or For Worse, one of the more realistic strips, always pulled this, and it drove me crazy. Animals acting like animals caused unreal, over-the-top, unhinged jaw screaming; gentle teasing by a sibling lead to wild chases (and these would be adult siblings, too, like here). And that to say nothing of the wide open mouth uproarious laughter at punchline that might warrant a smile in real life, and the gobsmacked look that strip became so dependent on during its last few years.

Oops–just saw that FBOFW was already mentioned in the post previous to this one.

It ain’t just in comic strips Bill - haven’t you ever been married to a woman approaching menopause?

He’s already in the back because he started climbing in as he was asking because he didn’t think she’s day no.
Men always insist on driving? My step dad has no problem letting my mom drive. All my uncles let my aunts drive when they want to. I have a guy friend who refuses to drive if he doesn’t have to. I’m sure my boyfriend wouldn’t mind letting me drive if I went ahead and got my license already….
