Nicole, I think that’s exactly the point of the Obama cartoon. And I thought about sending in the Get Fuzzy, too. I think that’s a first for the comic strips!

Okay, I admit it. I don’t get the “lick the beaters” one. The guys with the whips are the beaters?? Also, that hot tub joke is so old…

Actually I think the artist goofed up on the beater comic. The beater would be the one beating out the rhythm for the the oarsmen. It would have been better to have the guy with the whip say the line.

Whipping and beating are probably being considered synonymous.

As for the CIDU aspect on it:

Back in the old days (when I was *much* younger) mother would bake a cake/make
brownies by putting the ingredients in a bowl and mixing it with a electric hand mixer
with removable beaters. As it was impossible to get *all* of the batter off of the
beater, mother would as us kids if we wanted to “lick the beaters” for an instant
hit of sugar in the cake mix. This worked out fine until I found myself with 2 sisters
instead of just the one. At which point, rather than one beater of batter each,
one of us would have to settle for the rubber spatula used to clean off the battered
    beaters. Adequate, I suppose.

Ah, the memories. A nostalgic comic with just a hint of Ewww…

    chuckers-
Imagine what I go through every time I bake a cake…I have SEVEN children!

The comic about the slave ship actually contains a triple pun. (or double depending on how you count plays on words). There is a man who beats the drum, two men who beat slaves with whips and some device needed to be used as a beater to mix the cake. (Possibly the whips though it would be very tedious).
Speaking of cakes, the man’s open mouth and the caption at the bottom of the hot tub comic is just “icing on the cake”. Since no motors or wires are drawn, this comic would work just as well with nobody speaking.

At first I thought the mallets the pacesetter is using must be “the beaters”. Bu he’s not smashing them into the cake, or doing anything to put them into the story. So it apparently must be the guys with the whips, who — as has been pointed out — are gearing up to do some whipping which would count as beating.

The familiar childhood experience of licking batter off the blades of a cooking implement clearly underlies the wording, and there’s the cake, but … the cake is done and ready. the cooking-beaters are by now either washed or dried and crusty. The double reading isn’t quite neat.

I thought I’d see that particular Get Fuzzy here.

The beater one is almost syncronicitous with Sheldon - just without the ewww aspect.

  9. Nicole Sep 18th 2009 at 08:43 am 9

Like Bil, I remember licking the beaters — which thanks to this comic has taken on a rather disturbing meaning. Clearly the time keeper is refering the the men with the whips which makes this an Arl-EWWWWW for me

What amazes me is how many of these I was going to submit, but was too lazy

that’s not why dogs do that, however: http://bit.ly/VJ0lC

The peanut butter one is a CIDU for me.

  12. Lola Sep 18th 2009 at 09:56 am 12

I’m with Carolyn …. it was haha, haha, haha, haha, huh?, haha. I don’t get the peanut butter one. Is it part of a story line?

  13. Nicole Sep 18th 2009 at 10:22 am 13

Peanut butter is a better bait for mice than cheese .

If he isn’t smearing peanut butter — what other brown substance might it be ?

  14. Fnord Sep 18th 2009 at 10:23 am 14

Why is the president doing a proctological exam in front of Gerald Ford and Michael Jackson?

And I don’t get the peanut butter one either.

  15. furrykef Sep 18th 2009 at 12:20 pm 15

Nicole - the question there is, why would it be That Other Brown Substance?

  16. Mitch4 Sep 18th 2009 at 01:34 pm 16

“Watch Your Head” in the last couple weeks has been running not a really continuous storyline, but a continuing situation of the new school year at Otis University and how some of the shifted roommate situations are working out. I don’t think that bit of backstory includes an explanation of why “the other brown substance” would be smeared on the floor, but that’s what it seems to be implying all right. Ewww.

  17. Carolyn Sep 18th 2009 at 02:12 pm 17

    Re: Peanut Butter CIDU -
The standing guy says “Isn’t that why you’re smearing peanut butter…” not ‘why you’ve smeared’, and the other guy appears to be on the floor now, smearing something. So it’s an intentional act he is performing, further adding to the IDUness for me. Who does that after the age of diapers? Skeevy.

On Obama’s left is Hilary; I assume that’s Biden on his right. Does Obama have big ears, or is this cartoonist too used to doing George’s big ears?

And having three possible beaters just makes the first joke fall flat.

  19. Kara Sep 18th 2009 at 04:56 pm 19

No, on Obama’s left is Pelosi. It’s an ‘image’ from the joint speech to Congress.

  20. Frank the curmudgeon Sep 19th 2009 at 12:00 am 20

Chuckers - I lucked out being an only child. Then again I was a fat kid until I switched from beaters to LUCKY STRIKES. I think cartoon portrays Mr. Obama preparing to give the country a fisting.

  21. Mitch4 Sep 19th 2009 at 03:41 pm 21

Watch Your Head update — in Saturday’s strip it turns out that Jason has been treating the mouse as a pet. So his line here of “What peanut butter?” is just denial, and it is peanut butter, or at any rate something edible intended as mouse food. …

    Spoiler ….

Edgar the mouse has been snapped in Omar’s mousetrap.

  22. Snardo Sep 22nd 2009 at 01:03 pm 22

On the political cartoon, not only does it appear that Obama is preparing for a proctology exam of congress, but Biden and Pelosi (behind him) appear to be anticipating the event with great glee. Hmmm. Perhaps on that note it might be interpreted as Obama preparing to give the country a proctological exam (i.e. Obamacare). That would certainly explain the grins of Biden and Pelosi.

“…have to give Conley credit for the expression of Bucky’s face in the third panel.” Strangely enough, Bucky’s expression often looks like this, anyway.

No going to go into that…
