Not that anybody asked me, but…

I personally found this a lot funnier before I scrolled down to the caption on the bottom.

Maybe if you’re accustomed to marriage being something someone would want to get out of. For me, the panel made little sense without the caption.

I agree with Bill. Without the caption, it’s a commentary on marriage. With the caption, it’s cliche. I mean, you expect secret agents to have cyanide; you don’t expect newlyweds to. There’s no surprise if you have the entire panel.

Powers, I’m accustomed to marriage being something ->people in cartoons and sitcoms<- would want to get out of.

I agree: it’s far funnier without the title/banner/caption.

I guess it depends on the situation.

I too found it funnier without the caption. Divorce can be such a hassle.

I concur that it’s funnier without the caption. Although that’s because I don’t understand why spies would receive their cyanide at their wedding in particular. Unless you include the assumption that people in cartoons/sitcoms want to get out of being married, in which case take the caption away and focus on that.

Seems as if in this circumstance that less is more.

I agree with Bill — when I was married (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) in my Senior year of college, one wedding “gift” a fraternity brother gave me was a huge bottle of aspirin and a smaller bottle of sodium cyanide, in case the aspirin didn’t work. I don’t think my wife would agree with Bill, though, as she was not particularly amused…

@TasmanSea: According to the cinematic cliche, secret agents keep their cyanide suicide pills hidden under a gem in a ring. So it’s at a wedding because of the exchange of rings. Pretty weak. I agree with the other folks here: funnier without the caption.

Count me in the “funnier without the caption” camp. Maybe if enough of us say it, it’ll be printed in a collection without it. ;)

I thought it was when Cultists marry.

  13. Powers Sep 5th 2009 at 10:35 am 13

I’m sorry you all have a perception of marriage as something worth suicide to get out of.

Powers - this doesn’t mean we all have a bad perception of marriage. It’s the way comic writers often depict marriage that is the butt of the joke. I can have a wonderful marriage, but still feel as if it would be a better comic without the caption.
