The classic proof that there is an infinite number of primes is to assume that there is a finite set of all primes. Multiply those primes and add one to the product. The resulting sum will be a number not divisible by any lesser prime, and therefore is prime itself. Thus, the set of all primes is not finite.

“But XKCD’s proof, uncharacteristically, says no such thing. It says that we take the top prime’s divisors, which are itself and one. Its product, therefore, is the same number. Add one and you have a number that must be divisible by two, therefore nonprime. Nothing whatsoever erat demonstratum.”

CIDU Change in Schedule

Effective immediately, the CIDU site will be updated Mondays through Fridays only. The site is actually doing quite well, gaining readership at a good clip: the first year after the format change, we had just under 1 million pageviews; the second year, just over 2 million; this year, well over 3 million seemed certain (though dropping weekend updates might affect that).

The problem is, quite simply, not enough CIDUs. At one point I had a backlog of more than three months. Right now, I have four comics in the queue. You’d think that an ever-increasing readership would mean more comics sent my way, but what’s happening instead is that the same comic gets sent to me by three or four people rather than one or two.

I don’t want to get to the point where people come here expecting an update and all I have to offer is “sorry, nothing today,” so instead I’m changing the plan a bit: LOL collections on Monday, regular CIDUs Tuesday through Thursday, and Ewww Files on Friday. That will be the regular 12:02AM schedule, hopefully a sustainable one, and other stuff will show up at random times, same as always.

In the ongoing travesty that is the Funky Winkerbean strip, the Army somehow decided that the unidentifiable remains of a dead soldier were Wally’s. Imagine his surprise when he comes home.

Let’s not even discuss how such a mix-up is possible. What I’m wondering about is the logistics of this sort of thing: When Wally actually does pass from this mortal coil (which could very well be next week), will be be buried in the same grave where Faux Wally is right now? Can a plot be re-used? Or if this is a military cemetery, will the government just pull out the headstone and replace it with “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”?

Just for the record, the military specifically announced a few years back that in future wars, there would be no Unknown Soldiers, since DNA records would make it impossible to ever again have an unidentified body.

Is there any particular reason an iPod would work better than, say, a small rock? Seriously, I need to know this: I have a 16-year-old who doesn’t do mornings, who has to be woken up at 5:30 for school, and it starts up again in only a few weeks.
