Today, the John McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee apologized to Jackson Browne for using (without permission) his song “Running on Empty” in television commercials last year criticizing Obama’ s energy ideas.
Now, what I’m wondering is… Is this whole “copyright” concept a lot newer than I thought it was? Did the McCain campaign not get the memo? I mean seriously, how is it possible that nobody involved in the filming of the commercial knew that you can’t just appropriate somebody else’s song for a commercial? And have they all moved on to jobs with American Apparel?

I think most blogs get their share of computer-generated comments that feature generic praise for their sites but which of course are intended only to plant links to the “sender’s” site. I was amused by one of them I received this morning: “I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader.” Boy, did they dial the wrong number!

I wasn’t sure whether the topic was unique enough to call this synchronicity, but the fact that they appeared right next to one another made the decision easier.

You know, sometimes you come across a comic that doesn’t exactly make you laugh but is just too bizarre not to love:

State workers in Pennsylvania are getting empty pay envelopes for July — not because the state’s run out of money, like California, but because the Legislature hasn’t managed to agree on a 2009-2010 budget and therefore the funds aren’t available.
I’m curious whether they somehow found the money to air condition the State Capitol building; because I’m thinking 303 legislators, no windows, mid-July, suddenly getting the job done is going to seem a lot more urgent to them.

Just wondering… Will there be any editorial cartoons about Walter Cronkite’s passing that don’t include the phrase “And that’s the way it was”?
(Note to non-geezers: Cronkite’s sign-off was “And that’s the way it is”)

It took a couple of readings to get this one. At first I thought that panels two and three were out of order. Then upon subsequent readings I realized that this was a take on the Ninja slicing at a candle SO fast that it stays together for a time before falling apart. The question I have is, did anyone else see this strip out of order and if it is that easy to misinterpret does it actually work as a comic?
My answer to her question(s) are “Yes, several,” and “It worked for me, but YMMV.”

Frosted Donut: I don’t get it. And usually “Brainwaves” is very straightforward (and funny) so now I’m worried that I’ve crossed some invisible line that separates “competent” from “barely drooling.” I hope the explanation is really really complicated.
