For the record, the Argyle Sweater was the LOL.

I think the Brevity probably qualifies for the Arlo Award. (BTW, I think you forgot to put “Brevity” and “Guy & Rodd” in the tags.)
Amazingly, I figured out that the Non-Sequitur was probably going to be about an elephant in the room before the phrase was even mentioned. I guess it was too logical: “We’ve avoided it long enough” strongly suggests the phrase “elephant in the room”, and in a cartoon, a humorous interpretation of that phrase would be… an elephant in the room.
I wonder how many others managed to jump to the same conclusion.

I think this may be the first time I’ve ever seen Rat “invited” to another strip. But he stayed in character. I also jumped to the literal “elephant in the room” conclusion.

Josh–I actually don’t think Rat is entirely in character in this strip. I’m no Pearls Before Swine aficionado, but he’s never seemed particularly malevolent. He’s just cynical and selfish, but more like a con-artist than someone who actively seeks to harm others.
furrykef Jul 12th 2009 at 08:20 pm 5
Yeah, I agree with Kate C, though almost all of my exposure to Pearls Before Swine has been through CIDU. I just thought, “Huh, I never saw him do something like that.”

Call me dense, but I don’t get the BREVITY. Please explain. Gracias.

Depending on your font, or how this posts. The neighbor is planting trees in the form of a rude gesture.

Ok, that came out a pinky instead of middle finger. Ate my leading spaces.
Scott Jul 12th 2009 at 09:11 pm 9
I saw that “elephant in the room” gag coming a mile away.
Kamino Neko Jul 12th 2009 at 10:04 pm 10
Oh, rat’s malevolent, alright.
A recent arc involved him playing pied piper for people he considered stupid and drowning them. (It backfired when he tried it on the Crocs.)

Brevity was too subtle for me..
Usual John Jul 13th 2009 at 01:25 am 12
Beavers eat bark, not lumber, so I was thinking about that instead of the ostensible joke. Mulch would have been better as the processed food alternative. The same objection applies to Ziggy, of course.
chuckers Jul 13th 2009 at 05:14 am 13
Agree with Dan. Brevity was too brief to appreciate.
Rainey Jul 13th 2009 at 07:41 am 14
Rasheed, thank you for explaining Brevity. I thought the neighbor was planting the tall tree to block Dave’s view because he was a peeping Tom. Now that you pointed it out, this does make more sense.
Mitch4 Jul 13th 2009 at 09:12 am 15
Oh, yeah, come to think of it! I also missed the point of the Brevity and didn’t realize it — it seemed to be explainable as the neighbor simply wanting a barrier, but the finger is clearly more pointed.
MJB Jul 13th 2009 at 10:22 am 16
Thanks, Rasheed. The BREVITY is a witty idea not well produced.
Kate C Jul 13th 2009 at 11:56 am 17
I also misinterpretted the Brevity; I thought maybe he was constantly wandering around the house naked, and the neighbors were putting up trees to block their view.

If it was to be a one finger (or tree) salute, wouldn’t they use 4 trees, not 5, the thumb is hidden in a properly executed salute.

It depends what you are calling a ‘proper’ bird flip. My thumb extends out and up in my birds.
