Dam Confusing
Cidu Bill on Jul 2nd 2009

yellojkt: Beavers = construction workers and deer = hot babes? That sort of inter species sexual harassment is just sick.

Seems like the joke would have worked better if they were foxes, not deer. That being said, that is some gorgeous artwork for a modern comic!

I like how the one beaver is supervising the beaver that is power lifting. Also the one jauntily strutting along on two legs with sticks on his shoulder just needs is to be whistling to himself to complete the tableaux. I didn’t know beavers could do any of that. This is better learning than Animal Planet!
Notice that not only does this visually involve two seemingly unrelated species, but cats got dragged into it too.

And yet the colorists have screwed up again - unless these beavers are damming a grassy field. (A grassy field that reflects light!)

Patrick, most ponds I’ve seen have a layer of some kind of green organism - lichen, algae, lillypads, or what have you - making it look very much like this picture. And with a dam as well-established as this one, what’s behind it would indeed be a pond.

It would make more sense with male beavers and female beavers, but then we’re heading for the Arlo page.

or “but then we’d be headed for…”

Cornbread, the green is the exact same color as the grass. While I’m sure most ponds have some sort of greenish hue, it’s fairly obvious that the colorist didn’t realize that it was supposed to be water.

I can buy a greenish pond, but on “our side” of the dam, I can’t discern where the bank ends and the river bed begins.

I’m getting on the “picky” bandwagon. There is no reason for a beaver to build a dam next to the bank of a pond as appears to be the case here. That appearance may have been dispelled if the colorist got the colors right. And one more: I don’t think beavers live/work in colonies either, just breeding pairs. Which throws further confusion into the gender identity mix.

Pop culture has plenty of interspecies relationships:
Kermit and Miss Piggy (frog and pig)
Gonzo and Clarice (chicken and….I think Gonzo is classified as a “goon”)
Spongebob and Sandy (sponge and squirrel)
Pepe le Pew and that cat with the paint stripe (skunk and cat)
Goofy and his wife in the ’50s shorts (dog and human)
Howard the Duck and Beverly (duck and human)
Donkey and Dragon (from “Shrek”)
Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit (rabbit and human)
Brian (from “Family Guy”) and several girlfriends (dog and human)
Krazy Kat and Ignatz (cat and mouse)
Clarabell the Cow and Horace Horsecollar (cow and horse)

For nearly a year, when Jessica Simpson was becoming sorta well-known, I thought she was a cartoon character — something like Jessica Rabbit guesting in The Simpsons.

eeyore19, Mr. and Mrs. Rabbit aren’t a rabbit and a human. They both belong to the same species: toon.

Thanks for the mention! And yes, foxes probably would’ve worked better. And I have no idea what happened with the colors. Hope to be coloring the dailies in-house someday.

eeyore19 -
The chicken is Camilla and Gonzo is specifically a “whatever”. Not an alien. If you’re a fan, that is.

you don’t recognize “muppets in space” as canon?
