What song? “Beyond the Sea”? “Under the Sea?” “Whale alright I’m being foolish, whale alright let people know…”?

Puff

obamacigarette.jpgNot that President Obama has asked me for my opinion, but…

Of course I understand that as a role model for kids, the fact that he’s trying to quit smoking is a good thing — but honestly, with all his many responsibilities, do we really want him dealing with the distraction and crankiness that come with nicotine withdrawal?

(Of course, having just signed a major anti-smoking bill, he doesn’t have a lot of choice, does he?)

Bonus LOLs

Cidu Bill on Jun 22nd 2009

286571.gifThis one was way too big, so please click the thumbnail.

Of course the real joke here is that Parisi not only didn’t get the day off, but had to come up with nine gags: the concept itself, and then eight individual mini-comics. The third panel was LOL material for me.

A couple of people pointed out that the second panel was off-by-a-few-days synchronicity with this. Continue Reading »

Paiging Frazz

Cidu Bill on Jun 22nd 2009

paige.gif
Two people asked me if whether I knew of any special significance to what appears to be a Satchel Paige tribute. Sunday was not, after all, the anniversary of his birth, death or first game in the major leagues. Paige was the subject of a new biography earlier this month, but that’s all I could find.

Honoring Dad and Gramma

Cidu Bill on Jun 21st 2009

Seriously, when you get teachers sending messages like “Happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there,” it might just be time to write off the English language entirely. I mean, up to a point, I could think, “Well, the upside is that a good editor will always be able to make a living, since nobody knows the basic principles of writing anymore” — but past that point, you realize that functional illiteracy is becoming more acceptable and that the ability to correct other people’s writing will soon be as valued as the ability to manufacture buggy whips.

Final Father’s Day Comment

Cidu Bill on Jun 21st 2009

Thank you to everybody who wished me a happy Father’s Day, both by e-mail and in the comments boxes. I hope all the dads (and dad’s) out there had a good one as well.

Random Observation

Cidu Bill on Jun 19th 2009

My kids will probably never have to lick a postage stamp.

Related observation: If they ever have to, it would probably be funny watching them try.

Further observation: My grandchildren (who I’m not expecting for some years to come, thank you very much) might never use a postage stamp.

Losing Their Religion

Cidu Bill on Jun 18th 2009

A bit off-topic, I guess, but…

I’ve been wondering how religion can exist at all in the comic book world, given what the people see around them: Creating life has been done and done some more. Change water into wine? Dozens of people can do that. The Scarlet Witch can change the very nature of reality without pausing from putting on her make-up.

That whole resurrection thing? Please! Superman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Jason Todd, Electra, Jean Grey, Jean Grey, Jean Grey… Just over the past month or so, the Flash, Kid Flash and Superboy all returned from the dead. We’re not talking “missing and presumed dead” here, but dead-as-a-doorbell, bodies buried. Captain America is supposedly coming back this week. Later this summer, apparently, a slew of dead DC characters are coming back en masse. True, they’ll be sort-of zombies, but you can bet that the more popular characters will somehow end up whole.  Comic book heroes die, nobody even bothers to cancel their newspaper deliveries.

So in the DC and Marvel Universes, how is it possible for anybody to look at God/Jesus/Allah and see Somebody worthy of worship?

Before More of You Ask…

Hard clams begin their lives as males, and often become females later on. By comic strip logic — and if you don’t accept comic strip logic you should be more upset about clams talking than anything else — this means they should be going by themselves to the Sadie Hawkins dance. In case anybody’s stmped by the Sadie Hawkins dance itself, you can click here

And just for the record, the Lebaron has been out of production since 1995.

Worry

Cidu Bill on Jun 16th 2009

worry.gif
Gene’s 20, and has been seriously involved with Mary Lou for at least a year. Exactly why was Janis worried about a 19-year-old spending most of his time hanging around with his male friends? Did she think he was going to come down with a case of “gay”?

Of course, since we haven’t seen any of Gene’s friends in the strip for many years, it’s possible that he was hanging around with an entire crew of imaginary friends, and I can see where that might be problematic.
