Nicole: As long as you consider the ‘extra’ as part of the comic this was a LOL, EWWW and a CIDU for me , The LOL and the EWWW were from the main comic . The CIDU is the extra - I have no idea how it relates to the main comic or even what it means as a standalone

so are they falling on sticks for fun? in the same vein as autoasphixia or huffing?

Re the CIDU part: Falling on pointy sticks has been made illegal. The man is about to
deliberately fall on the pointy stick. He’s being stopped by someone official, who he
calls a “narc” in allusion to people who stop others from doing illegal things they want
to do.

The Romans really hated Justin Timberlake.

When pointy sticks are outlawed, only outlaws will have pointy sticks.

It’s not any fun until someone puts an eye out.

See — I didn’t read the caption as meaning falling on pointy sticks was illeagal. I sort of read it as a snarky response to the roman who was demonstrating the punishment for something else all together. That was why it was an LOL for me

I think Lola is right, and it’s some sort of analogy to the “fainting game” or sniffing glue or something. But I don’t see how that’s funny.

I think the main pic is to be taken as a warning to the masses, with us thinking the poor fellow ws being punished for something he did. The extra shows that he was told to stop doing something, he tried to run, and fell on his stick.

What’s the tricky part of either of those two panels? Obviously the first Roman is warning people precisely because there’s an epidemic of people purposefully falling on pointy sticks.
Fnord Jun 29th 2009 at 11:48 am 12
The first one is a standalone joke that I think everybody gets.
For the extra panel, remember that people have the weird urge to do things purely because they are forbidden. Nobody would ever have thought to purposely fall on a pointy stick before, but then the government told them not to, so now it must be a fun thing they have to try.

Ah, that makes sense. I was thinking the guy in the extra panel was the same as the one in the first panel.

Awww — you deleted Dave’s comment. I wanted to tell him how his clever use of the English language and his acerbic wit had convinced me not to visit this site ever again …. not
