I don't think it is a bike frame. I think Kimra was right the first time. Look closely at it, looks vaguely like a person. The two dangly bits on the bottom are shins, but the thighs are on top of each other and connect to the spine, which go up and split to the arms. No head.

In the second panel he says they are looking for a piece of bone. I think this part clinches it because there is no reason for him to say they are looking for bones, as apposed to other evidence of human life.

It's a bike frame. That makes it doubly absurd.

I think the joke is that what was found is WAY bigger than a dime, and I don't think it's a bike frame, if he was going to make it a 'newer' object make it something absolutely identifable, like a discarded toaster. The joke is Mr. Orangevest is inflating the difficulty of finding an artifact and his dirt grubber pulled something as big as a bike frame (but NOT a bike frame) out of the dig.

This is the same joke that was in 'Alien vs Predator'. Remember? That archaeologist thinks he has found something amazing in that tomb in Mexico (or wherever he is) but it turns out to be a Pepsi bottle top. The anticipation of something grand is destroyed by the unexpectedly mundane.

I don't think this is any kind of creationist swipe at archaeology. Unger strikes me as an absurdist more than anything else, so if one of his cartoons just has a ridiculous punchline I'll take it at face value.
With that in mind, while I'm glad everyone agrees it's a bicycle (I thought it was a hall table at first) I'd guess the humor came from realizing these scarce, primitive people might yield some surprises.

I took it as a jibe at a purportedly "prehistoric" mode of transportation, but then, I'm a cyclist myself and enjoy taking umbrage.

It's a bike, all right, but what's the funny? That humans were more advanced 100,000 years ago than we have always thought? It does look suspiciously like "young Earth" propaganda to me, but then again I don't know what strip this is or where it's usually published.

I think that the punchline is that that the "dump" site is MUCH, MUCH younger than "100,000 years old" (more like 25-50 years old)

My first thought was that the things in front were duck legs, but I had no idea what it was attached to. Then I decided it was a rather large dream catcher, surprisingly intact.

But it is in fact a bicycle frame, with no handlebars, wheels, seat, or pedals. I rather modern bicycle frame at that.

The cartoonist must be a creationist having a laugh at those nutty evolutionists. It reminds me of a poster I saw in a bible store, with an archeologist digging in a graveyard and finding a tooth that he believed belonged to a pre-human.

I absolutely agree its a bicycle frame, but why has it got chicken legs instead of front forks?
