Norm May 9th 2009 at 04:01 pm 2
Oh yes. ROFL x 2
Craig May 9th 2009 at 05:02 pm 3
As soon as I saw the drawing and before I read the caption I knew what this was about. A very big LOL.
Mario May 9th 2009 at 07:16 pm 4
It would be even funnier if they weren’t dogs.
Mitch4 May 9th 2009 at 08:59 pm 5
Like Craig #3, I got it as an LOL even before reading the caption. Actually, the screen hadn’t scrolled to include the caption and momentarily I thought it was a captionless panel; it took a couple seconds then I said “Oh yeah, he’s going to stop and sniff the [Rr]oses.”

Dogs wearing suits, driving cars - that’s all fine. But has anyone ever seen a mailbox embedded in a curb-adjacent sidewalk?
Marshal May 9th 2009 at 10:19 pm 7
jec - Yes. This is usually done so that the mailman does
not have to get out of his vehicle to put mail in the box.
Usually in areas where it is not practical for the mailman
to deliver on foot.
Marshal May 9th 2009 at 10:23 pm 8
Just to add. A lot of times the mail truck or car has the
steering wheel on the right. To make delivery even easier.
But not always.

Definitely LOL and not Eeew for me. But either dogs have better grammar than people, or this is seriously unrealistic (ignoring the whole anthropomorphism thing), because if they were humans, there’s a 95% chance that the mailbox would say “The ROSE’S”.
Kevin Andresen May 10th 2009 at 01:18 pm 10
This panel continues to make me feel like smiling. I think I’m going to be scrolling down to it as long as it stays on the front page.
Kit May 10th 2009 at 03:48 pm 11
Bill, would it make sense to start a category for “Cartoons that don’t need captions”? Because I think this one would qualify
David A. Rooney May 10th 2009 at 08:33 pm 12
Morris - at least they didn’t use Farside animal spelling and write the esses backwards.
Kit - Good suggestion, and this would definitely be on that page.
I also like the look of anxiety on the Rose’s faces - makes you wonder what they think of Cody.

Somehow I looked at the picture and got the idea that the dog by the mailbox was a realtor about to show a house. That made it hard for me to figure out the joke, even after reading the caption.
Morris Keesan May 11th 2009 at 07:37 am 14
My sense of reality is restored by David A. Rooney’s incorrect apostrophe.
Chaz May 11th 2009 at 10:40 am 15
Yes, that’s the purpose of suburban curbside boxes. [jec]’s point, though, is that they aren’t found embedded in sidewalks. They’re normally embedded in grass.
My neighborhood [along with most of the town] has curbside mailboxes, but there are no sidewalks to block. Downtown, where there are sidewalks, there are no curbside boxes.
Like [jec], I’ve never seen a mailbox like that mounted in a sidewalk like that. The one in the drawing even has grass at its base.
eeyore19 May 11th 2009 at 11:23 am 16
The question is, does their poop smell like roses?
The Ploughman May 11th 2009 at 12:46 pm 17
Definitely an LOL, although I like Mario’s (#4) suggestion as well.
Marshal May 11th 2009 at 04:38 pm 18
Here is a pic of a couple of mailboxes similar to the comic.
