Anvil? I checked out the 2 strips in that category so far, and the common denominators seem to be dark, heavy-handed, unfunny subject matter, and maybe “Too soon?”. Was I close?

This page might explain it for you.

Addendum: TVTropes is a very addictive site. Browse with caution!

BTW, this is also a CIDU for me. I get the basic premise that an obviously bad guy is trying the “That was in the past” defense while he’s still carrying instruments of death, but I’m guessing there’s something more specific going on here, especially considering his outfit.

I believe this is referring to the position Obama has taken on the past administration’s use of torture.
Nicole May 7th 2009 at 12:24 am 6
When asked about prosecuting Bush administration officials for torture, Obama has repeatedly said that he wants to “move forward’
The strip is indeed heavy handed, in that the Klansman represents the bush administration
The unfunny subject manner is torture.
I would say that this comic is a dig on Obama’s wishy washy response to the subject of torture and what to do with the people who authorized it.

Actually, there was a story recently about this one klansman who was going around asking for forgiveness but in his tv interview he was a little defensive and all “let’s just put it behind us.” I thought the comic referred to him, but the Obama thing works too, I guess?

So is it an anvil if we’re not sure of the message or just a poorly aimed one?
Nicole May 7th 2009 at 10:01 pm 10
I believe it is an ‘anvil’ cause it hits you on the head like one.
Todd May 8th 2009 at 02:42 pm 11
Did the torturers actually use a double barrel shotgun? Or is that just the only gun Wiley can draw. Because I don’t think the military has issued such weapons since… Did they ever? And did the torturers wear the Klansman outfit, or make the terrorists wear them?
So I go with DD on it being about a Klansman. Is it still an anvil?
Lost in A**2 May 8th 2009 at 04:14 pm 12
C’mon folks, it’s really not that difficult: A Klansman is
trying to get into Heaven by using Obama’s words about the
torture under Bush.
Digger May 9th 2009 at 12:05 am 13
Lost in A**2 nailed it, and because it’s a Klansman, I don’t agree that it’s heavy-handed. They have a lot to answer for and no acceptable excuses for their actions.
BTW, Todd, the military uses shotguns and probably always has — for the same reasons the police do.

Or, it could represent exactly what the artist intended. Could all of your assertions to the contrary be a matter of projection?
