I remember that, when I was a late pre-teen or early teen, almost every line of dialogue I wrote in a story ended in an exclamation point. I don’t have anything I wrote back then anymore — I just remember the habit — so I’m left wondering what the heck I was thinking when I was writing dialogue. I guess it made sense at the time…

    - Kef

I don’t particularly mind one exclamation point now and again. When three are used in a row, it sort of feels…fake? and annoying. I guess it seems as though the person is trying too hard to be cheerful.

turquoise - Cheerful? I’ve been known to overuse exclamation points. When I do it has nothing to do with being cheerful!!!

Frankly, I was surprised at hearing about retiring exclamations because no one is surprised anymore. Guess I’m by myself on this one!!!

I love good punctuation. Three exclamation points for emphasis, not two. A semi-colon instead of a comma. A space after a period; no space before a question mark.

However, I’m in the “nothing surprises me”[1] crowd so I am amused by grandpa’s observation.

[1] Not be confused with “nothing amazes me”. Not by a long shot!

Perhaps, now there will be room for the interrobang!

Exclamation points are great!! They’re a wonderful alternative to smilies to show that you’re not being serious. The best part is that the more exclamation points you use the crazier you sound!!!1!!!!1!BANG!l!!!!|!

The problems with the interrobang are that (a) it’s an ugly overstrike character and (b) it lacks the finesse of using ‘?!’ or ‘!?’, which are subtly different in feeling. It also doesn’t allow for things like ‘?!!’, ‘!?!’, ‘??!’, etc… all of which express even more subtle differences in bewilderment.

Unless grandpa is also saying that nobody expresses any kind of heightened emotion, such as anger or fear, or than nobody shouts anymore, this is one poorly structured joke. Ruthie’s surprise in the first panel doesn’t help his argument any.

Regarding things like town names having exclamation points: I like to spell Dennis! Kucinich’s name with an exclamation point, to reflect his campaign signs (as seen here: http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/6466/110108kucinichoj4.jpg ). (You may know him as an unsuccessful presidential candidate, but I know him as a successful congressman who’s represented me for most of my life).

Cornbread - Dennis Kucinich is cool with or without the exclamation point!!!!!!!!!!!!
