Well the joke is usually Timmy falling into a well. But I don’t think that is the joke here. Maybe Timmy robbed a bank and got caught?

Challenging, this one. I think the answer’s in his eyes. Lassie’s gotten the ransom together and Timmy’s mom, well, has other ideas.

Or was this about why Lassie seems to be turning into a border collie?

    Lassie’s selling dope.

The family is happy that they aren’t going to lose their home to foreclosure - but what will the neighbors think?

Or maybe Timmy is a dealer and has been caught, and Lassie is trying to save him AND retrieve the money..

This was a LOL for me. Timmy’s not so important now…she wants to save the money first!

Timmie’s in trouble because he stole a lot of money but mom would rather have the money than Timmie.

    That’s supposed to be Lassie?

Due to inflation, folks having been throwing dollar bills into the well, rather than change.

I’m with the “Timmy got involved in a dope deal that went bad and mom wants to pocket the cash” crowd. That episode would make for a totally kick-ass series finale!

I’m not sure I understand it, but I thought it might qualify as an LOL.

I’d say child slavery. I am curious where “Timmy fell down the well” came from since it never happened on the show.

“It was Paul who did, or, actually, almost fell into the well, in this episode. The only main character in the Lassie series, in fact, who ever fell down a well was Lassie herself, in Season 17’s “Well of Love,” a.k.a. “For the Love of Lassie.”

You can get info on just about every episode here.

In the episode “The Crow” during the 4th season Petrie Martin
    falls in a well.

And of course Lassie herself falls into a well in season 17.

Season 17!!?! I had no idea!

  14. Marshal Apr 30th 2009 at 11:13 am 14

I believe Lassie lasted as long as she did because the show changed over the years. Starting with Jeff then Timmy then
she joined the U.S. Forest Service. Then came her years wandering in the desert until she ended up at the Holden ranch a foster home for abandoned boys.

I was wrong before there were either 19 or 20 seasons, not sure which.

From the very little I have read the blame for the show finally ending seems to be new restrictions on the content of children’s television programs and a return to morality stories.

Marshal @ #10: “And of course Lassie herself falls into a well in season 17.”

Of course s/he did. S/he was 17 friggin years old. Poor goggie. ;-)

The best Lassie story is “Heart of a Champion” by T. Coraghessan Boyle. (Published in Esquire magazine, January 1975.)

I am inclined to believe this is a lame … okay, really lame … joke about Tim Geithner.

    LOL, Mike! Works for me!

  19. HM Apr 30th 2009 at 02:38 pm 19

I used to have a recurring nightmare about falling down a well or being in a house that was being smothered in a landslide and Lassie was trying to save me. I always woke up before being saved/dying so I never knew how it ended.

But I’ve hated Lassie ever since!

  20. Blinky the Wonder Wombat Apr 30th 2009 at 02:45 pm 20

By Jove, I think mike has the answer! LOL!

  21. tofor Apr 30th 2009 at 11:45 pm 21

The back story isn’t important (though interesting to speculate). The joke is simply that Lassie brought money as a signal (rather than a jacket or hat) to signal trouble, and all Timmy’s mother cares about is saving the money.

Ok, I think tofor nailed it. But I still stay Timmy was dealing smack and got burned.
