I saw it completely different. For a “Meet the Author” day, a store that sells new books will typically order a huge number of the book being endorsed. It’s a marketing ploy intended to get people in the store buying the book. The same concept doesn’t work in a used book store because it likely doesn’t have hundreds of copies of the same book. It’s a scam where the “author” is probably the store owner thinking people will flock to the store to buy books. But the public sees through it and beats the guy up for trying to pull one over on them.

I sent it to my husband, a book lover, with the subject line “Where do beat-up books come from? Beat-up authors of course.” I think that’s definitely where they were going with it - beat-up/rundown/worn-out books come from authors who look like that.

I thought it was that this guy is the writer of inflammatory books, and at least one person came by to meet him and show him what he thought of him and his books.

I see it differently.

Used book often look dogeared and worn. Now imagine that used books were not “old books that used to be new” rather they were a genre of their own — you’d have sci-fi, mystery, used, romance, etc. — so that “used” books were actually NEWLY PUBLISHED books that were purposely sold in worn-out condition.

Now imagine what the author of such a book would look like: dogeared and worn — not unlike the fellow in the comic.

This one took me a second, perhaps because what is shown are books so damaged that no bookstore I frequent would attempt to sell them and would just give them away. I guess the cartoonist needs to exaggerate for clarity and comedic effect.
