Found What?

I can venture a guess — but unless either my eyes or my monitor are going, this isn’t at all clear.

Hmmm. It’s too small to be porn. And I’m guessing that this strip isn’t realistic enough for it to be pot. So I’m going to go ahead and guess that it’s a CD or video game that his parents have forbided him to bring into their house.

Seems to be some kind of drug, most likely pot; the fact that it’s not mentioned by name or explicitly drawn makes it okay for syndication, I would expect. It doesn’t look like a CD or video game; the edges of it are clearly wrinkled, like a plastic bag, not a hard plastic case.

“A denim patch, Jeremy? I thought we’d raised you with better fashion sense than that, young man.”

It looks like a newspaper clipping to me.

He’s taping her words, but actually sucking them into the recorder before they reach his ears. Then he can play it back later - or more likely, never. Wouldn’t that be awesome if you could do that in real life? Like when your boss comes to nag you about getting out the important report, then stands there yapping for an hour about totally unrelated things. Man, I’d pay a lot of money for that device!

My mom found small clipped-out photos of porn in my brother’s room. My dad told her to put them back where she found them if they weren’t hers.

All the comments above are correct and prove the point: it doesn’t matter what “it” is, every reader is going to project whatever object would most be embarrassing for them to have a parent find. The more ambiguous the artist draws the object, the better.

Whatever it is, I don’t understand the concept of the playback thing. Is he saying that the teens want to relive awkward moments? Why wouldn’t he just want to fast-forward over them or something?

Instead of having the conversation THEN, he could have it later, when it’s more convenient for him.

Like after he’s smoked the contents of the baggy. (Getting rid of the evidence is only one of the potential reasons - putting off his inevitable grounding until he doesn’t have plans, building an explanation, scheduling it so his parents are the ones off-balance…)

Yeah, I’m with Paul. Unless it’s record and then erase..

It looked to me to be a porn mag. A very, very small porn mag. Maybe a Tijuana Bible.

No way, you guys, Zits isn’t that edgy. It’s clearly a note from a girl. That’s always what Jeremy’s mom finds in his room to be concerned about.

The conversation is being recorded because Jeremy just doesn’t feel like having it now. He’s Tivoing it for another time. That doesn’t necessarily make perfect sense, but we have to make some allowances because it’s a “what if” strip.

  13. Mario Apr 18th 2009 at 12:18 pm 13

Maybe it was a clipping of Arlo & Janis.

  14. Sed Apr 18th 2009 at 12:38 pm 14

    It looks like a coupon.

    It’s a MacGuffin!

  16. Peter Apr 18th 2009 at 04:17 pm 16

Gotta say it’s a baggie of weed, with enough ambiguity in the drawing for deniability.

    Perhaps a Clamato recipe?

    (too late?)

Note to the creators, assuming they read ths website: Make it a much harder drug than pot, something like acid or D.M.T. I kind of like this comic but I think it would be much more interesting as a hallucinatory, Robert Crumb style comic.

Having parental experience in these things, I’d say they found a note passed in class, subject of which would be X-rated or drug related. It’s the right size and shape and when I tried blowing the image up, there appeared to be horizontal lines across it.

  20. Brian Apr 19th 2009 at 12:24 am 20

It’s pot. This is the reason that Jeremy is in the tenth grade for, what?, twelve years? You’d think that his parents might’ve suspected something before now.

    15 - Beat me to it :P

  22. SusanS Apr 19th 2009 at 04:09 pm 22

Wow…. I’d just ASSUMED it was a condom! Badly drawn, to be sure, but it was in his SOCK drawer. That’s where they live. He’s never used it, so it’s old and a bit ragged.

  23. padraig Apr 19th 2009 at 10:54 pm 23

My number 1 guess is weed because of Mom’s grip, she’s executing the classic two-hand, four-finger “hold it up for full view but don’t spill the evidence” grip. Works nice if the kid make a grab for it and she has to yank it away.

Guess # 2 is the condom, but for one of those she’d use a minimal physical contact, thumbnail and index finger nail, “ewwwwww I can’t believe I’m touching this”-type grip.

    Or possibly I’m projecting……

Maybe it’s the report card he hid away because he didn’t get as good grades as his parents expected.

  25. Cidu Bill Apr 20th 2009 at 12:32 am 25

My own assumption was “condom” — but from a parental point of view, I’d say a single unused condom is a win-win: The kid hasn’t needed it yet, but is far less likely to give his parents these if he does.

  26. Molly J Apr 20th 2009 at 09:12 am 26

Whatever it is, the sock drawer is a lame hiding place.

  27. Daniel J. Drazen Apr 20th 2009 at 10:06 am 27

My guess was Condom In A Wrapper. Or maybe a twin-pack because if it was drawn to scale….

  28. Gaf Apr 24th 2009 at 02:10 am 28

Nah, it’s much clearer in the paper. Its his failing report card ripped up….
