Dorothy says “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.” Got it. But what’s the joke here?

The receptionists always sound funny when they say the names of the acronyms. But, I think the joke - other than the Oz theme is like Dewey, Cheatem & Howe.

Maybe the joke is that that lawyers are more scary than the animals Dorthy was orignally afraid of.

“Lions, Tigers and Bears” sounds like it could be the name of a law firm. They usually do have 2 or 3 names connected by “and”. “Lyons” and “Bear” are even fairly common last names.

Is that a dog or a big rat on the desk? And what is the K2 on her notepad about? Mountain climbing?

  5. LostInTarnation Apr 14th 2009 at 01:15 am 5

The receptionist is Dorothy, and Toto’s sleeping on the desk. Apparently Dorothy sold out to the things she and her companions were most afraid of. This couldn’t have gone well for the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman. (Well, maybe the Cowardly Lion did okay).

Wayne - The K2, eyeball, and UFO are 3 of the standard features of Bizarro; the count (3 in this case) is above the signature.

This is a reach, but maybe it’s the final thing that translates from Dorothy’s dream (or “dream” if you prefer to think she wasn’t really dreaming) into real life. Each of the people in her family were the people and animals and objects she met while in Oz, but the lions (except for that one nice one) and tigers and bears weren’t around until she got older and got a job in the city.

Marla has it right — she is saying hte names that make up the acronym of the law firm she works at, it just isn’t very funny

BTW may favorite law firm has always been -
Hungadunga Hungadunga Hungadunga & McCormick which was Captian Spalding’s law firm in Animal Crackers

  9. Morris Keesan Apr 14th 2009 at 09:01 am 9

Nicole, you left out a Hungadunga. You left out the most important Hungadunga.

Morris, tell them we’ll send the Hungadunga later.

Oh, while you were out you got a phone call. Please call the Franklin Park Zoo and ask to speak with Mr. Bayer.

The joke is that “Lions, Tigers, & Bears” sounds like it could be a law firm, so Dorothy is the receptionist, still saying that line repeatedly. That’s it.

The K2, eyeball, & U.F.O. are explained on the Bizarro website: http://www.bizarro.com/symbols/index.htm.

This is getting way overanalyzed. If it was Brevity or Argyle Sweater, we wouldn’t be discussing it. But since it’s Bizarro, we’re trying to find the “hidden, deeper” meaning. The only thing that throws off the joke are the B and OM of different lines, but the whole thing doesn’t really fit with monogrammed firms anyway.

As for joke firms, there was an MTV skit show called The State in the ’90s, and there was a commercial for the law firm of “Booger, Booger & Fartybutt”

    um, yeah

there are three main partners in the firm Mssrs Lyons and Tigers and Ms. Bayers-O’Mai. Ms. Bayers met and married a man of mixed Irish and Asian ancestry and hyphenated her name.

    Mark in Boston.
Mumbles furloughed the Staff at Frankin - Mr Bayer is now
    a rug.

Dorothy doesn’t seem to understand business attire.

  18. Jestempies Apr 14th 2009 at 10:53 pm 18

I think the joke is that she says that in a bored receptionist tone of voice.

  19. Bob Peters Apr 14th 2009 at 11:48 pm 19

I think the joke was that she was saying, “Lions, Tigers and Bears Oh My.”

It just isn’t funny like it was intended to be. When Bizarro does a stinker, it really sinks.

  20. Nicole Apr 15th 2009 at 08:26 am 20

Here’s another thought — the intials on the sign stand for something totally different than what Dorothy is saying — but because she is Dorothy, she can’t help herself from saying the “lions tigers and bears oh my’ mantra

Let Dorothy be Dorothy is what I say

The Wizard of Oz was originally written by L. Frank Baum, which looks strikingly similar to the LT&BOM…but that’s probably just me reading too much into it. Still kinda creepy, though.

  22. Jeff Apr 16th 2009 at 10:15 am 22

Before I actually read the joke, I saw the word “TOMB” written around the “&”.

  23. Brian Apr 16th 2009 at 10:58 am 23

That’s correct, Jeff. It’s a subtext in THE WIZARD OF OZ. Dorothy has died. Oz is an afterlife, and she gets to return to our world. It’s a resurrection story.

  24. Nicole Apr 16th 2009 at 11:10 am 24

Hmm then is the Wizard of Oz is an alegory for reincarnation? She dies and comes back with a better understanding of her life and what is important in life

  25. Brian Apr 16th 2009 at 11:12 am 25

I’m thinking more resurrection, Nicole. Re-incarnation involves returning in a new body, a new incarnation, an apparently new life. Dorothy returns in her body, her old life.

  26. Colleen Sheehy Apr 17th 2009 at 12:40 am 26

Obviously, none of you know many lawyers or law firms! My dear brother, partner at a firm (which shall, for obvious reasons, remain nameless) says these are actually archetypes for classic lawyer courtroom/boardroom behaviors. The only one missing is the shark, but then that didn’t fit the OZ joke, did it? Dorothy is the receptionist who Knows Where Everything Is, OH MY!(And, if you believe any of this, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale, going cheap…)

  27. Bob Peters Apr 17th 2009 at 07:42 pm 27

Death and resurrection? I took it she was knocked out cold and dreaming a highly symbolic dream embodying, among other things, her struggle to survive the konk on the head.

  28. Brian Apr 17th 2009 at 07:46 pm 28

One interpretation doesn’t negate the other, Bob, and the “cold” in “knocked out cold” itself alludes to death.

My wife works at a law firm and has had to deal with another firm called Weiner & Cox. Seriously, she got me a business card from them because I thought it was so hilarious.

Best part is, if you call and refer to it as wine-er and cox, the receptionist may correct you and let you know it is ween-er & cox.
