The World Health Organization announced today that, at urging of meat producers, it is officially changing the name of “Swine Flu” to “Influenza A.”
I’m not making this up.
Do they seriously believe that anybody will really start referring to the virus as Influenza A? I’d be shocked if a single news outlet even once uses the new name without at least parenthetically referring to the old name as well.
May 1 update: As of today, neither NPR nor the BBC has gotten the memo: Both continue to refer to “swine flu” (probably because, you know, that’s its name).

Morris Keesan: The first two panels are fairly typical for a strip involving Dogbert, but I don’t get the last panel at all. Is it just that Dogbert is “in Dilbert’s face”? Or is he standing on Dilbert’s penis?

Last year, I said that the 2008 March of Dimes Walk America would be the end of an era — for us, anyway — because my son and I would be participating for our sixteenth and final time (we began when he was 2). Turns out we’ve got one more walk in us, since he’s working an internship this spring close to home.
So same as last year, any donations made to CIDU (you can use the button atop the right-hand column of this page) by the end of the day on April 25 (today) will go to March of Dimes tomorrow morning — and I’ll pay the PayPal fee (they help themselves to 6% of all payments, the goniffs) and I’ll match all donations.
Total donations so far: $225

Are we supposed to assume they’re actually doing the ol’ Vertical Arlo and Janis, or are they really concerned that the kids might see them kissing?

Nicole: El Condor Pasa is one of my favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs, but would many people under the age of forty recognize it? Rick is definitely showing his age in this Soup to Nutz

Elyrest: I know it’s Earth Day and it’s most likely been done before, but My Cage and Mother Goose and Grimm are doing the Synchronicity thing.
This month’s
Mother Jones magazine, by the way, discusses the dark side of compact fluorescent bulbs: They contain enough mercury-based neurotoxin to be classified as hazardous waste, and must be properly recycled. Most Home Depot and Ikea stores accept used bulbs but Wal-Mart — the company that positions itself as the “champion” for CFLS — does not.

My first thought was that whenever he tries to sunbathe, people think he’s beached himself and moves him back into the water; but the green backhoe is obviously an Earth Day reference, which makes this a CIDU

“Little wiener.” I get it; it’s a penis reference. I was once eight years old. But what does any of it have to do with Green Lantern specifically?

I can think of very few male friends or relatives who wouldn’t do (or haven’t done) this.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume he’s actually saying “April 22.” The original date for the switchover to digital television, by the way, was February 17: April 8 was never relevant.
