I know I will feel really dumb shortly, but I don’t get the first one. I’m completely thrown off by the shirts the people are wearing and the South Beach diet reference.
Commence bashing.
AMC Mar 16th 2009 at 01:00 pm 2
The joke is gift revenge - returning the gift-insult with another insulting gift.
Or, in gift language:
“You need to diet!”
“Well, you stink!”
Ian Osmond Mar 16th 2009 at 01:00 pm 3
Fortyfive: think about what it says to your friends when you buy them a diet book as a present.
Then think about what it says to your friends when, in return, you get them plug-in air fresheners.
Actually, the “Scent-A-Clues” shirt is helpful in this. . .

Thanks AMC and Ian. That’s sort of what I thought was going on, but I was still trying to work in the “Hanes Evening Wear” on the one shirt and the “Visa Wear” on the other, along with the “Think” on the guy’s shirt. I guess I did too much of that!
Todd Mar 16th 2009 at 04:54 pm 5
If it wasn’t for the Visa Wear, which I doubt really exists, I would think the shirts are rented out ad space. Product placement comes to comics.

In the beforetime. many of us wore shorts with corporate logos or slogans on them.
Slowly it dawned on us that we were not being paid to be walking billboards, in fact we were paying for the very advertisements we were wearing.
Some folks have yet to figure it out.
Elyrest Mar 16th 2009 at 06:27 pm 7
Elliott - where on your shorts did they put the corporate logos or slogans? The possibilities boggle my mind.

Just found your site…hilarious stuff. As I mentioned on my blog I think I am too young to get most of the Dinette Set humor.
Andrew Mar 16th 2009 at 09:40 pm 9
Ah, see I don’t know much about the south beach diet, so I was assuming it involved a lot of fibre, causing people who try it to need to have air fresheners around them all the time.

George Carlin said it: “Ever get a bottle of Scope from someone? … Ever GIVE a bottle of Scope to someone? … Imagine a guy who’s just on the edge, and it will only take one little thing to push him over …”
Lihtox Mar 16th 2009 at 11:23 pm 11
Interesting; I think the shirt slogans were meant to be explicit clues, apparently the cartoonist realized that people wouldn’t get the joke, so he tells us “Think”, and then juxtaposes “Scent” with “Clue”. Kind of a “wink, wink, get it, huh, get it” sort of moment.
I’m wondering why the hostess seems to be meeting her guests in her pajamas. (Her shirt says “Hanes Evening Wear”, I’d guess.)
Patrick Mar 17th 2009 at 12:30 am 12
Lihtox, Julie Larson, creator of Dinette Set, is a “she” cartoonist.
Charlene Mar 17th 2009 at 04:49 am 13
I guess it went over my head.
I thought they were giving those horrid air fresheners because the South Beach Diet makes you fart like you’ve never farted before. They assumed that if their hosts were on the diet, they might want something to cut the smell.

Todd, product placement has been in cartoons a long time:

Tom T. Mar 17th 2009 at 07:29 am 15
She always does that with the shirts.
Lord Jubjub Mar 17th 2009 at 03:00 pm 16
South Beach Diet is a high protein diet, not a high fiber one.
Charlene Mar 17th 2009 at 06:40 pm 17
Which is why it causes tons of farting, not tons of poop.
David A. Rooney Mar 17th 2009 at 08:36 pm 18
Flatulance! Diarreha! Body Odor! Ahh, the highbrow art of the comics has come a long way.
ljdarten Mar 28th 2009 at 01:01 pm 19
I’m just amazed to see a dinette set that can be “gotten”.
