Larry Currie (”Why? It was an innocent old people comic no one really could build up love or hate for. Now I have to think of them having sex?”), zobabe, Chris Reaves and Matthew Wilson all sent me this Pickles strip that Brian Crane apparently slipped past the syndicate’s censors.

    Surprisingly funny!

My wife and I both got a good laugh from this one. I was pretty sure it would end up here.

Ahhh, but is he laughing or crying. He’s at that age after all.

  4. Matthew Mar 15th 2009 at 09:11 pm 4

I feel for the wife. I spend way MORE than half my time waiting for it.

Why are young people so narrow-minded? “I don’t want to think about people having sex unless I personally approve!” Who died and made you the sex god?

Charlene, I HOPE you are referring to me. If so, it’s the best compliment that I’ve had in a long time to be called “young people.” My best guess is that I’m older than at least 80% of the folks here.

Ooooohkay Lola. Why are (some) old people so narrow-minded? “I don’t want to think about people having sex unless I personally approve!” Who died and made you the sex god?

I want my turn being the sex god, where do I sign?

Pickles is underrated. Dry yet effective humor.

Why is the sink making a “glorp” sound in the first panel? Is this necessary?

Oh good, I saw this today in the Sunday comics (yes, I know, I procrastinate) and was hoping someone sent it in. The funny part is that in our newspaper, Pickles is the very first comic on the page, so it’s the one everyone sees.

Charlene - I prefer not to think about old people going at it either. Then again, I also prefer not to think about males or animals in the act. There are just some things that I prefer not to have mental images of, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think they should happen. And yes, I know your comment was directed to Larry Currie in the text under the comic.

I’m with Earl’s wife. I’m tired of waiting for it, too, and I’ve spent way more than half my time waiting for it. IT’S NOT FUNNY!

(Perhaps it’s time for her to find a man who will give her his secs right now, not in a sec.)

For those of you who don’t want to think about old people going at it:

    1. Since you think there’s an age limit, at what age do YOU plan to stop yourself?

    2. In reality, you do not become old until you stop.

    Javier,

The “glorp” reinforces the sink reference, which quickly gets lost in the secs/sex situation.

I love Pickles. When it first came to my local paper I thought, “Great, yet ANOTHER comic strip written by some 70 year old man whining about hemorrhoids or saggy boobs or constipation or how expensive medication is, lame.” But the strip isn’t like that at all. It’s hilarious. I love it because it’s finally a comic about an old couple who still love life and, gasp, live it to the fullest!

Maybe I’m weird, but I don’t mind thinking about old people having sex. I want to be enjoying myself with the love of my life when I’m that old, and to know that not everyone just dries up and spends their retirement watching TV and bitching about young people is encouraging. That’s what makes this comic so great. Yes, the characters in it are elderly, but they don’t let that define them.

Stolen from an old Fusco Brothers. The only link i could find: http://forums.randi.org/showpost.php?p=646972&postcount=10

but it’s in one of the first two collections.

This was done better 20 years ago in Fusco Brothers. Gloria’s initial throwaway, as she’s putting on lipstick, is “Ah, if only these lips could talk …” Her boyfriend asks when she’ll be ready to go. “Just a sec.” “You said that five minutes ago.” “All right, then, half a sec.” “We’re already late and now you want to halve secs?!?”
