Stupidest F****** Bird in the World

Cidu Bill on Mar 30th 2009

Maybe some birdophile can offer a suggestion here…

There’s this cardinal who for just over 11 hours on Saturday flew into the bay window in my living room. Continually. For over 11 hours. No exaggeration. Stuns himself, gets up, says “d’oooh,” and flies into the window again. Hundreds of times.

Sunday, same thing.

This morning he’s back at it.

There’s nothing  inside the room that can possibly be attracting him. A couple of people suggested taping silhouettes of raptors in the windows.  They might as well be targets. I stand next to the window like a human scarecrow, waving my arms. He ignores me.

Eventually, I’m going to have a dead bird in front of my house.  I’d rather this not happen, despite the fact that he’s permanently scratched up an expensive window and this would clearly be Natural Selection at work — but I really have no idea how to cure this bird of his obsession with my window and send him off to get on with his life.

Any thoughts?

CSIDU

Cidu Bill on Mar 29th 2009

Okay, that acronym doesn’t really work, does it?

Anyway, I read that actress Marg Helgenberger is divorcing her husband of 18 years and is seeking spousal support. Helgenberger has co-starred on the highly-rated CSI for the past 9 years and now that William Petersen is gone, she’s presuambly the best-paid cast member by far.

Can anybody explain to me the concept of spousal support — in 2009 — for a woman who is earning, and is continuing to earn, a monstrous salary?

Please don’t respond just to agree that this seems weird: there’s no sport in shooting fish in a barrel. I’d like to hear from people who can explain this.

Morris Keesan sent this to me, writing “This seems really out of character for Frazz, who hasn’t been shown to be that mean-spirited.” I’m thinking Frazz thought he was “treating” the driver to a more scenic route, but this definitely warrants asking for some more opinions.

Rodney is supposed to be good-looking by comic-strip standards?? This was certainly never hinted at previously, and far from apparent in today’s strip.
But if not, I don’t see the joke here.

About Those Rubrics

Cidu Bill on Mar 27th 2009

rubic2.gif
Okay, I’m with the teacher here: The strip doesn’t even begin to exaggerate how anal some of them are about what they ask for for — but as long as their analities are spelling out ahead of time (and they don’t involve impossible requirements), I don’t see a problem.

On the other hand (going off-topic a bit), my younger son’s fourth-grade teacher would have given him a low grade for this project even if he’d followed the rubric perfectly, since it was her belief that parents should do most of the work on a student’s project. Not “It’s okay for parents to do most of the work,” but “Parents are expected to do most of the work, and my grading system reflects the expectation of parent-quality work.”

Really.

And I’m not just saying this was her belief — She actually told me this explicitly, criticizing me for letting my son create his project on his own. I even asked her to repeat herself, on the off-chance that I’d misunderstood.

I’ve always wondered why it’s acceptable (and in this nutjob’s case mandatory) for parents to make their kids’ science projects for them, but not for parents to write their kids’ essays for them. I am, after all, a much better writer than I am a Styrofoam solar system creator, so why is it “irresponsible” for my kid not to use me “as a resource” (quoting that teacher) in science, but not in English?

”Two-Top”??

What’s a two-top, and why would missing Gene make her tell him/it/them they were out of dessert?

I do like the gag itself, though, and Gene’s panicked expression.

My Final Funky

Cidu Bill on Mar 26th 2009

endoffunky.gif

Okay, I’m done. Tom Batiuk has clearly made a fetish out of tragedy and death, and this depressionfest has become no more than a vehicle for him to work out his issues.

I don’t really believe he’ll kill off Funky — after all, I can think of only one cartoonist who ever ended his “humor” strip by killing off the title character — but whatever happens next, it happens without me: It’s off my reading list and will no longer be discussed on this site. As far as I’m concerned, the Funky Winkerbean strip ended in 1992.

For anybody who hasn’t seen it, I direct you to David Willis’s classic 2007 panel.

He’s saying it’s dishonest to assume people know that $170,000 million is the same thing as $170 billion? The bonus caption, “and 0.002 dollars will NEVER equal 0.002 cents,” while of course quite true, only seems to confuse the matter.

(And we’re not even discussing this from a British point of view)

I Remember When Rubric Was Just a Cube

(Though I’m not old enough to remember when it was something Hannibal crossed) rubric.gif
Not a CIDU, but I was just wondering… When did this become common school jargon? I don’t think my kids were ever given instructions or guidelines for a project or paper: They’re given rubrics, a word I’d never heard before.
