and here I thought that Boyd is so used to taking care of Lila, that he carries tampons for when she needs them...

because honestly, Lila strikes me as just that clueless/scatterbrained that she would expect not to have to carry tampons around and who else but her best friend (male/female, gay/straight, what difference does it make?) would be there for her when she needs one...

I think the mistake in the cartoon (giving the artist the benefit of the doubt that the joke is supposed to be "Boyd is not offended by tampons") is that the word "tampon" is blurted a panel too soon. It seems funnier to me if the word is hemmed and hawed around for the first three panels, then the final one has a line for Boyd like "You mean a TAMPON, right? No problem, got one right here."

Of course, if the joke is supposed to be "gay people carry around tampons," well, there's nothing that can really be done to make that funny.

Wallaby is correct; I meant to say "gay men" but there's no way to edit comments and I didn't think it was worth calling attention to with a correction post.

jjm - I think her expression says "duh, I should have asked Boyd first."

I don't see Ann making this joke either, but Barry Sotero might. After all, he enjoys picking on defenseless widows with his humor. What an ass.

The other half of the joke, of course, is 'men are always disturbed by "feminine problems"'. Which is true less than half of the time (in my experience), but that's the stereotype. So (many) women will go out of their way to avoid mentioning pads or tampons or that they're on their periods around men - and many others will deliberately talk about them in order to shock a man (sometimes works, too).

So the joke is partly Boyd's having a tampon (or at least saying he does) and partly her careful avoidance of the word until Lila forced her to say it - and then Boyd's casual acceptance/knowledge. I think the artist put the wrong expression on her face - Boyd and Lila look properly smug, but she should be at least disconcerted by Boyd's comment if not shocked, instead of simply happy he has what she needs (at least, that's how I read her expression).
