No Shirt, Sherlock
Cidu Bill on Jan 20th 2009

Since, to my recollection Dewey has never been identified as being openly gay, his comment is a mystery to me.

I think by ‘higher’ he meant above the waist.
Targuman Jan 20th 2009 at 12:17 am 2
“Always maintain eye contact.”
Paul Jan 20th 2009 at 12:19 am 3
If he’s gay, maybe he meant that he would have been staring at the guy’s ass?
Kevin Andresen Jan 20th 2009 at 01:01 am 4
Bill, I don’t understand your logic. In my experience the stereotypical non-gay man is not comfortable looking at another man’s nether regions.
Oh…, I get it, higher than his feet. never mind. (I’m with Rough.)

He said “a LITTLE higher”… clearly he is an ankle fetishist.
docbobm Jan 20th 2009 at 03:58 am 6
My thoughts,
Patron is a woman.
Dewey knows this man is naked, he is a regular.
If she was looking at his shoes, she would be in line of site of his (no so) private parts.
His advice to her now becomes standard Dewey as he would not want to look at the guys private parts.
Then again, I could be wrong.

docbobm has it. It seemed pretty obvious to me. And since Dewey has gone on dates with a woman, it is doubtful that he is gay.
Miss Appropriate Jan 20th 2009 at 09:24 am 8
Um… in any case, can’t he easily see the dude has no shirt, which is one of the disqualifiers?
Miss Appropriate Jan 20th 2009 at 09:29 am 9
By the way… dating women is not one of the disqualifiers to being gay. A gay man may date women to try to live a straight life, to try to look like he’s straight, or he may be in denial to himself. Also, some gay men love to hang out with and even make out with women, the way some straight girls love kissing women.

Well without knowing he was gay I would say he was trying to avoid looking at the guys junk. Knowing he is gay doesn’t really change that perception for me too much. The guy walking out doesn’t exactly look like he’s supposed to be all that attractive.
Matthew Jan 20th 2009 at 02:32 pm 11
I am afraid that I don’t get this one. The man isn’t wearing a shirt; thus, he should have received no service, shoes or no shoes. The whole joke seems not to work particularly well.
Keera Jan 20th 2009 at 03:55 pm 12
Maybe the library has no “no shoes, no shirt, no service” rule at all. So the problem is that the guy is barefoot all the way up his legs.
Keera Jan 20th 2009 at 03:56 pm 13
…and one should have said rule.
Now I’m done.
David A. Rooney Jan 20th 2009 at 08:40 pm 14
I think Dewey is commenting on the fact the woman looked the guy over from head to toe and only upon noting he had no shoes did she refuse service, when in fact she could have/should have stopped at noticing he had no shirt. In other words, she missed the obvious. The comment “a little higher” is sarcasm.
Lot of work for not so much funny.
Nate Jan 20th 2009 at 10:51 pm 15
Yeah, Miss Appropriate, but that isn’t really the sort of social commentary the strip goes for.
As for the patron, he is a well established anti-authoritarian lawyer, who isn’t cowed by “the man”’s insistence on clothing.
Annie Benson Jan 21st 2009 at 05:25 am 16
I think that the joke is she was looking at his lower portions. To see he had no shoes, she had to have seen him in his entirity (entierity? Enter… his whole self.) Dewey’s saying that since he isn’t gay, he would have noticed the guy wasn’t wearing a shirt, and then made a decision to not look down any further and risk having to see the weirdo’s junk.
Jeff S. Jan 21st 2009 at 11:36 am 17
Apparently the patron thinks the rule is “No shirt AND no shoes, no service”. She was informing Dewey he wasn’t wearing any shoes EITHER, therefore he should have been denied service. Since he was served, she assumed not wearing a shirt wasn’t enough.
Andie Jan 25th 2009 at 01:09 am 18
If you read the strip regularly, you’d know that Dewey isn’t big on rules. He doesn’t care that the guy is breaking the rule — he’s just surprised that the woman isn’t being a little more careful to avoid seeing something she’d rather not see (or at least, that Dewey’d rather not see if he were standing where she is).
Matthew Jan 26th 2009 at 06:48 pm 19
TO ask a stupid question here. Couldn’t you be arrested for being naked in public?
