He fell in an open manhole.

I think the humor is supposed to be that when most people say they “stumbled into” a line of work, they do not mean it to be taken literally, while the man in the comic actually fell through an open manhole.

…and somehow this got him a job? Or maybe it made him realize that such a job opportunity exists, and he then sought it out?

What I am wondering is: what are they supposed to be doing? They are in a sewer, and the hose they are using is submerged in the water, indicating the liquid is being siphoned out, but to what purpose? Maybe the cartoonist simply drew them doing something vaguely sewer related, and never intended the reader to think too much about it.

    This guy — I think he’s a producer for the O’Reilly Factor.

Where I live, “This guy I know”, the powers that be occasionally have to clear the storm sewers of discarded plastic shopping bags, take-out coffee cups and lids, old sneakers and other detritus that makes it (or is forced) through the grates.

He’s dredging various solids from the bottom, including detritus that entered through the grates, junk people flush (including small pets), and the solids that settle out of regular sewage. Hey, you asked. ;)

Thank you Ooten Aboot and Miss Appropriate for your explanations. I really should have thought of that, as my father worked for the local water company. Before retiring, he was manager at the sewage treatment plant, which has a mechanical device for sifting out such garbage, but it never occurred to me that such a cleaning might need to be done at an earlier time.

    Still, I don’t want to completely dismiss LostInTarnation’s explanation…

A fail. You don’t stumble into a manhole, you fall into one. Likewise, he should have “fell into this line of work”… stumbling just doesn’t cut it.

This guy — I think he’s an Obama (PBUH) cabinet member.

One can go for many months with out “hearing” the word detritus.

Twice in one post, I love it.
    I do like This Guy’s summary….

    Happy New Year to all!

I just really like the fact that they need a sign to indicate that the street is up. As bright as the place is, one might say it looks flushed with success.

    And his name is Norton.

I like how the hose, to me, looks like a giant straw, and I imagine some giant monster topside…

    What’s the “PBUH”?

  14. This guy I know Jan 6th 2009 at 01:34 am 14

PBUH: Peace Be Unto Him. A Muslim phrase often said after saying (or hearing) the name of a prophet of Islam.

In this case, a reference to the “Secret Muslim” past of Obama.

…or rather, “Peace Be _Upon_ Him”…

(…see, this is what happens when I fail to spend 20 minutes obsessively proofreading every forum post I make…)
