Arlo isn’t feeding Ludwig; rather, he’s got up to get himself a snack of chips or something, on which he’s already munching. Arlo criticizes the cat for heading to the available food at the slightest excuse but we can see that he does the same thing himself.

ARLO CAN’T FILL THE BOWL BECAUSE LUDWIG IS IN THE WAY.
(not yelling - just too lazy to unlock the caps lock)

It’s not mealtime. Arlo just got up to get himself a snack, and the cat assumed (as cats always do) that he was about to be fed, so he ran to his dish.

A different spin on it - as mentioned, Arlo isn’t feeding the cat, he’s getting himself a snack - and then he’s rolling his eyes at the cat ‘always going for the food bowl’…while he’s got his mouth full of a between meal snack.

Kelex has it right. We have a cat that assumes that we live to feed it. Anytime you go into the kitchen he follows you, clearly thinking that you are going to feed him. It’s clear because he sits next to his dish and meows at you.

Yep, this strip hardly qualifies as a c.i.d.u. It’s good, sly, Jimmy Johnson wit.

Oh — I don’t know — if you don’t have a cat it might be a CIDU

I don’t see this as requiring a cat. It has nothing to do with feeding the cat or Ludwig wanting to be fed… he already had food in his bowl. If Arlo actually fed the cat (or even had to add food to the bowl) this joke wouldn’t work at all… they both need to go straight to food (in fact, Arlo goes so straight to the cupboard for chips that he only notices what Ludwig did on the way back).

I’m not sure why, but the way they’re getting up off the couch, I was assuming that they’ve been watching TV, and they both got up for a snack at the start of a commercial break.
As far as the intended humor, Jan and Kamino Neko (cute handle, by the way, and very appropriate for this strip) have it right: Arlo is being a hypocrite, criticizing Ludwig for what he’s doing himself.

Gotta say, my first impression of this was way off base, despite owning a cat. I thought that Arlo was indeed going to feed Ludwig, and was criticizing him for being unthankful, much the way a cook would get annoyed at someone digging in without paying tribute to the one that made the food.
Then I saw Arlo eating something out of a bag, and I thought he was eating cat food. That’s when my brain stalled out in confusion and I checked these comments for guidance.

Thanks. ^__^ And, yeah, I love commenting on cat-related things just for that reason. Heh.
Also, Jan - I apparently missed your post, or I’d have posted mine as agreement, not ‘another spin’, sorry about that.
