Lucky He’s Not a Horse, I Guess

But what’s the joke here, other than the fact that Charlie Brown probably should have done this to Lucy a long time ago?

I dunno, but I’m finding that third panel utterly disorienting with its right-to-left action. To me, it reverses the flow of the strip.

It a simple combination of a reference and humorous slapstick. It, also, subverts slapstick in a humorous manner, since most such comedy is harmless and inconsequential.

Why do you always say, “Other than…” and that say what is essentially the joke for the strip? If you already know what the joke is then why do you have to search for some deeper joke?

Bill, please post the next few comics. I am not famial with this comics but this might be an storyline if the writer follows up on it.

I meant an interesting stoyline. Sorry, I am tired.

  6. assdad Dec 4th 2008 at 02:10 am 6

    I, also, meant “familiar.”

Because, Maddie, I am very much like Peggy Lee

  8. Patrick Dec 4th 2008 at 04:16 am 8

You’re never supposed to say “Peggy Lee.” It’s always MISS Peggy Lee. That’s the law.

Sadly CIDU Bill, too often in cartoons the simple and not very satisfying gag really is all there is.

The joke, such as it is, is that the cow was not lying when it said it would not pull the football away. Unlike Lucille Van Pelt, that is. It takes a familiar situation and puts a macabre spin on it.

How COULD the cow pull the football away?

  11. Nicole Dec 4th 2008 at 09:08 am 11

This is clearly a sexist comic - the artist is implying that Lucy Van Pelt is a cow — it’s a wonder he didn’t put lipstick on it

Darn — forgot to click the notify button

In fact, there was a late Peanuts strip in which Lucy didn’t pull the ball away, and Charlie Brown kicked her in the hand. So this is a lame Schulz ripoff.

assdad: Cow & Boy is one of those strips where Sundays are standalone, and storylines only happen on Mon-Sat.

For me, this one falls into the category of “didn’t really understand it, but thought it was hilarious anyway.”

  16. Matthew Dec 4th 2008 at 12:31 pm 16

This strip is just bad. The joke is lamer than the cow. Hey! Maybe that’s the joke!

  17. GP Dec 4th 2008 at 01:03 pm 17

It was a lol for me, though it’s not easily explained why. It’s typical Cow and Boy humor - the boy’s big fear of getting tricked and hurt is unfounded and irrelevant since he’s too clumsy to kick it anyway. He thought his friend would deliberately inflict pain on him, but he accidentally inflicted far worse on her. I guess maybe it qualifies as irony?

But seriously, Maddie, when I use that phrase your so dislike, what I really mean is that (in my opinion) this can’t be what the cartoonist is getting at.

Four-legged animals with broken legs are nearly always killed - and the dangling broken leg is giving me serious Barbaro flashbacks - so I just can’t get past the ick and sadness to the funny. I know humor always theoretically has a whiff of cruelty to it, but this one just makes me cringe.

    1. I like the twisted spelling of your name.
    2. There are many jokes that are funny in stories that would be appalling or horrific in reality.

The joke is that people with victim complexes usually end up hurting those who really are on their side, because they already expect the worst in people.
